I Have seen it many times................."What makes you think Class A/B is better for sound quality in subs"................
SINCE WHEN IS MONO BETTER FOR SQ THAN STEREO??????????????????????
2 SUBS ON 1 CHANNEL OR 2 SUBS ON 2 SEPERATE CHANNELS.......WHAT WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE?
This has been ARGUED MANY TIMES. Why, i have no idea. I have always used Class A/B amps for my subs, because im a SQ guy. Recently companies have thought of ways to 1. Get more power 2. Be more efficient 3. Big power at a smaller size,(We all know the size of a Class A/B 1000 watt amp) enter the CLASS D amp.
As with most anything , You Get, You Give. Since your gonna be getting 1. more power 2. Running more efficient 3. Have a amp HALF the size of your Class A/B, Your gonna have to give up some SOUND QUALITY.
Granted if your running BIG POWER 2000+ watts for your subs than Of course a class D would be more appropriet. But as far as SOUND QUALITY, your not gonna be running 2000+ watts and have a good sounding SQ System! Period.
The best brand (amp) you can get for sound quality (IMO) is a ZAPCO. They do not offer class D amps. Only 2 channels amps.Zapco
Also a VERY respectable brand US AMPS They do not make Class D amps. However, they do make a class T amp which is similar to a class D, except the distortion levels arent as high.
Overall this is my summary..................
Class D . Less heat(because people who have these BLAST the living fawk out of them), more power, not as good sound quality
Class A/B or A or B. Will generate more heat then a class D but the SQ will be better, due to the fact that you will be able to provide each sub with a seperate signal.
Hope this helps someone with their decision between a Class D or Class A/B
Now i know some !@#$% is gonna disagree with me AS ALWAYS for who ever that person, this is for you

if you truly truly want to know about amplifier topology, read here:

now comes my rant, reply, post, whatever you want to call it.
Dizzle, you know some stuff, but you make WAY too many generalizations and assumptions.
now tell me, can you really hear the difference between left and right all teh way from your trunk? bass is nondirectional really. thats why you can put one sub in the corner of your room and still hear it everywhere. now if you had subs in your kickpanel and had them imaged, i could understand stereo bass.
in all actuality, if you are running your subs in a common chamber (no divider in the box), it is highly adviseable for you to bridge them, because once you start getting songs that have some bass notes on the left, some on the right, your sq goes to CRAP because you get cancellation, and all sorts of retarded interference.
youre entitled to your usage of class a/b, but is it truly necessary, not quite.
no you dont, if you get a good class D amp. the human ear doesnt recognize distortion in sub 80 hz tones until its past 10%. a PROPERLY installed sub and a proper sub will not introduce distortion into your system regardless of amp class (some exception such as jensen amps and other low quality power)
oh really? cant run high power and have a good SQ system? i beg to differ. ever heard of overhead. say your sub needs 500 watts to sound at its full potential and youre not gonna bang it all day because hey, youre an sq guy, sq guys listen to sq stuff and dont want block rockin systems. now i guarantee you that if you take a 500 watt amp and set teh gain nicely, then take a 700 or 800, maybe even 1000 watt amp, and set the gain very very low, your larger amp will sound WOLRDS better. overhead, less strain on teh amp, less heat, etc.
for example, i know youre aware of speakers like the brahma and the w7, both exceptional "sq" woofers. a brahma doesnt shine its true sound until well past a kilowatt, and a w7 sounds beautifully well over its rated power. youre gonna tell me a sq nut WONT run 2 12 w7's with 2 JL 1000/1's (which may I add, are class D amps).
oh yes, every person in teh world with a class D amp blasts the living hell out of it. that is one HUGE generalization.
class A is hardly used in car stereo due to the fact that its HORRIBLY inefficient, and class B distorts slightly, and is NEVER used in car audio.
I'll repeat once more, multiple signal to subs = CANCELLATION
bass in nondirectional.

I'm having trouble finding the review online (if I do I'll post it) but not too long ago the owner of Zapco said that the JL 300/2 a better amp than any of his amps. Not saying you need to change your opinion of Zapco, but for the money I definetly like JL better. Also, Xtant just released a 100 watt class D monoblock. It was also recently reviewed in Car Audio magazine. The reviewer said that it was one of the best sounding amps he's heard, class A/B or otherwise. So Class D isn't always just a sub amp made for cheap power. Just a few thoughts I had.
