injen recharge kit debate
so, many people say to clean the injen/k&n/maybe aem filters require the k&n recharge kit and the oil to reoil the filter afterwards, and i am a firm believe of it. but i just got into an argument with phill today(onepurplecivic)
so i am here to verify that the recharge kit isn't a gimmik to take our money, like other products
...
Voice of id: brb, applying oil on my intake filter...
onePURPLEcivic: ok
Voice of id: now i wait 20 minutes for oil to dissepate
onePURPLEcivic: what are you talking about
Voice of id: i am recharging my intake
onePURPLEcivic: on what
Voice of id: my car
onePURPLEcivic: recharging it?
Voice of id: yeah... you don't recharge your intake?
onePURPLEcivic: hahah, shut up. I have no idea what you are talking about
Voice of id: the injen intake filters are oil based
Voice of id: simular to k&n
Voice of id: and requires cleaning
onePURPLEcivic: ummm, o.k.
onePURPLEcivic: clean yes,
onePURPLEcivic: oil no
Voice of id: after cleaning, you must add a coat of the filter oil back on
onePURPLEcivic: i didnt read the last thing you wrote
Voice of id: or else, the filter won't function right
Voice of id: you have to add a coat of filter oil onto the filter after cleaning
Voice of id: if you have a oil based filter
onePURPLEcivic: um,ok
Voice of id: that's where the k&n and injen's filter color from
Voice of id: it's the intake filter oil
Voice of id:
onePURPLEcivic: i think that is funny
Voice of id: why?
onePURPLEcivic: that is like washing your car with a certaint soap or vacumming yor car with a certaint vacuum or it is the same thing as octane booster.
onePURPLEcivic: It is all a gimic
Voice of id: um... okay
onePURPLEcivic: you use octane booster dont you?
Voice of id: it's 13 dollars per pack, and the thing recharges like.. 5-10 times
Voice of id: no i don't use octane booster
onePURPLEcivic: hahah
onePURPLEcivic: seriously think about what you are tellingme.
onePURPLEcivic: it is just somthing else for them to make money off of
Voice of id: if that's what you think, fine
Voice of id: maybe you have an alumium intake filter, but far as i know, all injen and k&n filter must be cleaned this way
onePURPLEcivic: It wouldn't make any type of difference on your car at all in any way.
Voice of id: it doesn't it cleans the filter
...
opinions are welcome

Hey choiboy19, was this your first time recharging/cleaning the filter? How long did you wait after install? I've heard varied opinions on how long to go between cleanings...

guy's a dumbass.
you gotta clean the filter occasionally. at least get the dirt out and wash the filter and let it dry.
oiling is optional.... I really dont know what oiling will do, I suppose to keep more dirt out.

oiling isn't optional. You have to oil it to keep the dirt out of your engine. If it is a gaze fiter it flows more air and also won't filter without the oil on it. You will ruin your engine without the oil.
Think of it like this... lets say it was smoky in your house or a club or wherever you were. You take a handkerchief out and put it over your mouth. It filters some of the smoke out. Now take that handkerchief and dip it in water. Now breathe through it again. It would trap a lot more dirt in the wet handkerchief. Now as far as it required? No...it's also not "required" that you even use a filter. You could take the filter completely off and your car would run. The question is how long would it run before dirt and debris ****ed it all up. So.....from there I'll let you decide if you want to use the oil or not. ( just as a little kick in the right direction....you'll notice that dirt bike racers and rally racers all oil their filters.. coincidence?)

Many foam filters (the really good ones) also should be oiled. You just wash them well with detergent, dry, and then saturate with oil.
It's the oil that catches the really fine particles.

We always ran oiled foam filters on dirt bikes so we could clean them. The original paper filters would be totally clogged after maybe one 100 mile off road enduro.

I don't have an Intake, but I do have a Super Nitro Rally RC car, and I've seen pictures of engines where the owners didn't put the air filter oil in, some of them had sand poor out of the cylinder... so I'd recommend using the oil, and in the off chance it doesn't do anything, its better to be safe than sorry.

I guess thats why they just throw away the OEM paper filter... cuz it can't be reused.
I use to think u just oil it so it'll filter better.. or at least, cotton filters...
i mean if u have a cheap k&n style cone filter thats paper.. oiling it wont do much... will it?

My only experience with pleated cone filters is with K&N.
If you ever left paper money or just a note in your pocket and your clothes got washed, then you know what happens when you wash paper.
