Why do 01's have straight exhaust and 02's have bent down exhaust?

I just noticed this a while ago and was wondering why they changed it. Is it harder to get an aftermarket exhaust on the 02's because the exhaust design is different?

Thanks,

how many 2001 civics have you seen with straight exhausts? they did change the midpipe a bit about midway through production or so because of a TSB relating to a noise when driving through puddles...the pipe was too close to the underside of the car and would vibrate...maybe that explains the difference?? Mine is a 01 EX and the exhaust exits straightout the back, there is no turndown on the end of the pipe.

I thought sedans have the angled exhausts and coupes had the straights. When I was looking for my car, I saw 02 sedans with angled exhausts... But I have a 02 coupe and the exhaust is straight... Are the 01 sedan exhausts not angled???

I think the sedans curve down because of the bumper
you know how its bubble shaped???

Maybe Honda doesn't want their sedans to be riced out with exhaust tips???

But IMO I think its the bumpers

I thought it was the 01's with the straight pipes and 02's with bent down ones. Maybe it is sedans and coupes, though... hmmm...

It's the bumper. On the sedans there is no exhaust cutout, so the pipe bends down. I had to get a new muffler because of how bad it looks.

CapYoda has a spectacular aura aboutCapYoda has a spectacular aura about
its the bumper.

the tips are different... coupe and sedan.

I suppose thats why aftermarket exhuast system doesn't fit on sedan. heh. cuz the tip wont fit. kinda lame.

It'll fit but it'll melt that part the bumper, most likely.

which is lame cuz even the japanese aftermarket company makes it for the "coupe" only... when there are only sedans in Japan.

this is right. Coupes have the cutout and the sedans dont. Time to get an aftermarket bumper
