Does performance exhaust = loud?

Is there a direct relationship between exhausts that perform better and exhausts that are louder?

Cuz I hear that muffling techniques (silencers, resonators, etc.) take away power.

yes and no.

some mufflers are designed to emit louder tone, etc.... some have no restriction at all and is just a pipe...

mufflers work on a few different ways to reduce (or in some cases, increase) exhaust tone, all of which adds a certain amount of restriction and hinders power output...

so people opt not to run a muffler at all, hence the loud exhaust tone... and depending on their application, there is some power gains...

but yeah, some are worth it, some arent. some just makes annoying noises...

take a look at drag cars, they dont have mufflers, its just few feet of pipes extending out of the engine....

the power that are taken away, IMO, aren't too significant in respect to the loud annoying noise you're canceling out.

A lot of it has to do with exhaust pipe diameter. If you increase your pipe diameter (as you should if you want flow), it's tougher to keep it as quiet as it was when it was small.
