'05 honda civic 4 door windshield replacement
Hi,
Well my windshield is cracked and needs to be replaced.
I wanted some opinion with people that have already had there windshields replaced (05 civic or related).
I have the original glass on there and it says PPG. Since PPG is not around anymore should I just go with the PGW glass? Or does anyone recommend another company for this specific model? The shop i am getting it replaced from said the PPW is chinese now so I should go with some other one.
Anyone can help me out here? I just dont want any problems with my windshield like if i drive on the highway or any leaks or air i can hear or even any vision problems.
I would appreciated anyone's assistance and experience. I live in the Chicagoland area if anyone knows any good shops.

Re: '05 honda civic 4 door windshield replacement
I won't touch a windshield. There are people that do them all day long and do it far better than I could ever hope to.
--------
PPG spun off their auto glass division, it became PGW.
Here's a couple articles I found quickly:
http://raysands.wordpress.com/2010/1...rks-still-oem/
http://www.glassbytes.com/newsPPGKohlberg20080708.htm
From comments: If you are looking for a qualified glass professional outside of our service area, we know of few tools that could help:
PGW (formally PPG) has a network of Prostar Retailers who are qualified and generally above board, and you can check their database by zip code on PGW’s website. Also, the NGA (National Glass Association) offer a similar tool within their site that allows you to find NGA Certified Technicians or even search for shops with an NGA Certified Master Technician.
And other comments
check windshields.com or glass.net
And
There are several manufactures of glass and they must all pass federal guidelines. Check the dot# ask questions
And
the bottom line comes down to how the glass is installed. If installed correctly you will have no air or water leaks, so get with a company that always warranties there work
^^^I agree here.
98% of the issues I have seen with replacement windshields has been from poor, careless, and hurried installations.
IMO it seems much more rare to actually have a visual distortion problem in a critical area that is due to flawed glass, but it can happen.
I'd suggest you check with your local dealer(s) and see who they would recommend (as far as getting one installed, who does the best job?), then check customer reviews. http://www.angieslist.com/

Re: '05 honda civic 4 door windshield replacement
xyg/fyg(used by most shops around me for its cheap price) is generally crappy small objects inbetween layers, distortions (wavy) and cracks fairly easy
ppg/pgw is fairly good has occasional vinyl blems and distortions
guardian and pilkington are top notch, have less vinyl blems and less likely to have distortions also take rock hits far better
pilkington iirc is made in uk and guardian made in us.
ive heard a joke were xyg stands for eXamine your glass just for how crappy it is
if they have anyother brands post it up and ill try to put in my opinon. ive worked at a autoglass distribution center and have experience with a bigger selection than what ive typed out

Re: '05 honda civic 4 door windshield replacement
I had a PGW replacement in my 05....over time it got a lot of the little dot marks you can only see in super bright sunlight.
My 2010 came with a PGW oem it now has them also.
I would likely go with PGW though.

Re: '05 honda civic 4 door windshield replacement
Thanks for your help.
Well the glass that is on the car is the one from honda and it says PPG.
I was thinking to go with PPG(or now PGW) but the glass tech guy said that the newer hondas are now coming out with AP Tech glass.
I just want to have a good glass that doesnt give me problems in the future (in terms of a good installtion etc etc) . So which glass would you recommend for my 2005 honda civic four door? Is pilkington good or AP tech?
Your help is greatly appreciated. I was thinking to get this work done tomorrow

Re: '05 honda civic 4 door windshield replacement
Also, if i get a different brand glass than the one on the car right now (PPG) will it have the same dots? (actually i am not sure what the dot pattern is, can anyone explain this also?)

Re: '05 honda civic 4 door windshield replacement
I would think all would have the black area around border.
Some do not have the tinted area at top. (my 05 replacement and stock '10 have tint)
Sure would hate to loose that, I would check if you could.

Re: '05 honda civic 4 door windshield replacement
pilkington is great just kinda pricey. the pattern around the perimeter, third shade and color strip at the top vary brand to brand
also problems occur with installation generally not the glass, the installer could not of cut out the previous urethane flush enough and it leaves a little gap were it causes leaks and windnoise

Re: '05 honda civic 4 door windshield replacement
I called the installer today and he said $205 with tax (installation and glass) with the pelkington brand. I hope he does it correctly. I told him straight up i want a good job done. We will see how it goes tomorow
