metal bumper splitter

metal bumper splitter
i am soon to be ordering hayames so im looking to possibly make some bumper splitters. i dont plan on having it go the entire bottom of the front bumper. i plan on having it a 2 piece. im guessing it wil look good on my xenon bumper. i wont be using thoes stabilizer rods cus i dont like how it looks. im simply going to drill it on from the bottom. so dones anyone have any pics of splitters on our cars? how about a website that has pics of various cars wiht splitters?? pics would help me decide wether or not i wnat to spend the time to fabricate these or not. it would aslo give me ideas as to how i want to design them. if it works out and u guys like it, ill post a DIY with dimensions. THANKS

the car in this pic has the splitters, but it also has the stabilizer bars.

Go to home depot, get a big sheet of aluminum, cut it to shape and attach. That is what I would do, especially if you were making a two piece.

i wont be using thoes stabilizer rods cus i dont like how it looks.
Why try to put on a downforce adding part, then worry about what it looks like? That makes almost no sense.
i agree with robbclark1 just make it out of aluminum from home depot.
i had one, and ive seen it done, not very hard at all.
if you really want one www.teamprototype.com has em in carbon fiber w/
stabalizers and i think you can get it from them in aluminum too but i dont think its
on their website.

boilermaker: well the splitter wont be angled so there will be little downforce. also im not making it stick out as much as the CF splitters. at the most it will be sticking out from the body about 2 inches. i dont intend this to create downforce. i just want to use it as a bumper protector from scrapes and rocks

ohh ok il have a set put on. can i go to home depot and buy a set there? im sure they have an existing product or one that i can make. thanks for the insight Boilermaker.

Home depot has sheet metal aluminum used to line the bottom of doors. It is fairly thin and easily cut. You should make a template using cardboard and cut from there. It might take you a few times. Sand the edges to get them smooth after cutting.

I probably could figure out how to make a set with basic hardware... All you'd need is a threaded rod, spherical rod ends, a couple bolts w/ matching nuts and 2 large diameter washers. Just make sure you re-inforce the bumper where you drill the hole for the stabilizer... be certain it won't pull out. Use a huge washer, and you might also want to back it with a large square of aluminum... distribute the force over as large an area as you can. Mount it to the bumper with a spherical rod end, then bolt it straight to the splitter (drill a hole and bolt it from underneath).
Without having taken a really good look at how they're hooked up, I don't know what's really done, I'm sure there's different attachment variations.
NOW... there is one alternative if the bumper allows for it...
Use relatively thick aluminum so you can be sure it doesn't flex (like 3/16" thick)...
When you align it on the car, bolt it in on the corners and along the back edge.
THEN, every 6" or so along the front edge of the bumper, drill and rivet or bolt the splitter in. You'd need to do it straight into the bumper, not into the splash guard, and it probably would also be advisable to put a re-inforcement strip (more sheetmetal) inside the bumper (basically make an internal frame for the bottom of the bumper). Then make sure you grind a round chamfered edge on the front of the splitter (it'll break the edge and force the air over or under the splitter, rather than creating a stall right infront of it). If you could blend the edge of the bumper to the splitter that would be even better still... maybe try a soft rubber strip between them so it compresses, then cut away what squishes out when you bolt it up.
That should hold it still and you should be able to do it without the stabilizers. Its worth a try first... you'd probably feel it shuttering if it was... it would mess with the feel of the car pretty good if it started vibrating.

im starting to hesistate with this splitter. i examined the xenon bumper and it looks like the bottom of the kit isnt parallel with the ground. from the wheel well the bottom inclines. i guess this kit was designed this way to improve the ground clearance on the front end. i dont have my kit here, in the other house, so i cant varify whether or not it is actually "tapered" or not
