Extra Key Question
Extra Key Question
I just picked up my '01 Civic LX today, it only came with one ignition key(which does not have the honda logo on it so I'm assuming is not an original) and one keyless entry remote(Automate/Viper model 410) I'm concerned about only having one of each, e.i. what happens if I lose either or they are damaged. I gather from the other posts that I have read so far that I need to go to a dealer and have them make me a new key, my questions are these: is it going to be a problem that it doesn't appear to be an original honda key? And also does anyone know how to get an additional viper entry remote without having to buy a whole new system? Thanks.

the remote costs $100, and you shouldnt need a spare. mine has been working for 5 years, if it stops you either need to change battery or clean the contacts inside. my spare is still sitting in a drawer somewhere. you shouldnt need a spare key either but you never know... but i wonder why you dont have a honda key, cause the 01+ civic i thought requires expensive keys with a chip inside. does yours look like a regular key or are there tiny groove in the side of it? if its regular key, idk maybe yours doesnt use that security feature and then you can just get a key made anywhere.
I have an 01 and it only came with one key. I think honda said something about $70 for another key. I had taken the key to ACE and they said that 01 was the first year they put the chip into the keys for honda. SO yeah SUCK ***. Hope I was of some help.
Any reputable locksmith will be able to program a new key to your immobilizer (you don't have to go to Honda). He just needs to stick a device close to your ignition and then can program the chip into a blank. Honda is not the only place that you can get this done, they just want you to think that so that you won't try anywhere else and rob you of your hard earned cash. It should cost about $60 for a locksmith to program and cut one key.
As for the Viper remote, you might be able to buy a DEI (Directed Electronics) brand transmitter and program it to your old alarm/keyless entry unit. This requires looking in the instruction manual for the alarm (which you probably don't have) but you can probably find it here Directed Support. Then you have to locate the 'valet/programming' button and then perform a sequence with the ignition and transmitter to program it. New transmitters from DEI for the cheapy kind are probably around $50 each. But you could probably find them for less on ebay or somewhere else. If you can get the same exact kind that would be the best idea.
Good Luck

we got laser cut keys, but smashing the window is just as easy as it used to be... doesnt make a whole lot of sence. Are the chips inside DL, LX and EX models?

if you have the lil green key icon that flashes on the gauge cluster when you turn the car off, it has the immobilizer security and needs special keys.

new, yes, you'll get 3. used, only if the dumb bastard that had the car before you remembered where they all were when he sold it. i only got 1 valet key with mine, but i paid $5000 less than KBB for my car, so $100 for 2 master keys was nothing.
