6 years old tyres but good tread, should I replace them?
6 years old tyres but good tread, should I replace them?
Plz Guide!
Car is Honda Civic 2008.
Tyres were made in 2014 but they have good tread, mechanic mentioned that they are hard though due to age of tyres. We only drives like 700-800 km per month (mainly in city).

There are not any cracks as such but like some parts (really small) are torn as if car went on gravel.
What is meant by dry rot, sorry not familiar with this term 😬

I wouldn’t if they’ve hardened like you’ve mentioned. They’ll be super slick in something like rain.
Old tires are what killed Paul Walker. While I recognize you probably can’t get up to the speed his Porsche did, it’s just something to think about.

But are they actually hard or is the mechanic looking to make a buck?
The current civic I have and the last one both had 10 year old tires but they were garage kept and they were fine

thanks Colin, it seems mechanic wanted me to buy new ones from him and that is why showed me his collection after commenting about hardness 🍀
I took car to two other mechanics after that and they just told me that they are in good condition. 😁

Re: 6 years old tyres but good tread, should I replace them?
NHTSA (Nat'l Hwy Traffic Safety Adm) tires expire 6yr & British Rubber Manf Assoc “strongly recommends” all tires replaced 10y from date of manufacture & unused tires >6y not be put into service.
However, I have tires over 10 years old with good tread depth (ie over 2mm)...as long you are not driving at high speed and just about town and also there are no cracklines along the side of the tire (ie some call that dry rot guess due to UV from sunlight degrade the rubber) and if you not worried of a tire blowout while driving slowly ... and you say couple other mechanic said it is OK, then I think it is low risk but that your risk decision to make versus cost of new tires

Re: 6 years old tyres but good tread, should I replace them?
reminder that rule is quite recent. Before that there were no expiration dates.
Cracked rubber is one indication. Stiffened rubber (thus low grip) should be another effect of old tires to decide on replacing or not.
Also, don't drive like a crazy nut (even new ones could explode if abused)
Imagine my Tempa spares in the trunk of my 2002 car that were never used
