How hard is it to replace a windshield?
I've searched and found nothing on this yet.
Has anyone attempted to replace their own windshield?
If anyone has would they be able to post a quick DIY, or give some insight into how difficult it is to do this yourself.
Thanks Everyone!

Re: How hard is it to replace a windshield?
any chance of insurance paying for some of it? idk, its one of those things that if you havent done it before, you might run into some problems. i was talking to a shop owner who does window replacements on the side and he lost count of how many people come in with a botched diy job they want him to fix cause either they did not seal it properly and its leaking, or it doesnt look the way it should. and this is assuming you have a way to transport a whole windshield to your house.

Re: How hard is it to replace a windshield?
No, unfortunately my insurance doesn't cover glass.
I'm considering attempting this myself because I have a couple friends with cracked windshields who are also considering a DIY attempt, being able to practice first on somebody else's car would be rad. I asked the guy at the scrap yard and he said he'd give me a windshield for $30..
I'll get it repaired professionally, and delay my HID install, unless someone on here has DIY'd it successfully.

DON'T DOOOOO IT
That should be left for the professionals.... you'll do it and it'll leak and the seals will warp and the glass will crack and you'll end up spending twice as much.

Aftermarket. OEM is way more expensive, and and I don't think there are all that many benefits to it.
$170 is in your area though, I'm thousands of kilometers away and in a different country so prices are bound to be way different.

They make it look so easy... good luck if your going to take on this DIY. Take lots of pics and post a DIY on this forum with tips and tricks of what you learned. I'm sure they omitted some parts in the video.

Lowlife: I live very close to the border, but I can't cross it; its a long story.
tbohar: I know, it looks sooo easy eh! The only part that I anticipate being difficult is laying the exact right amount of caulking so that it doesn't bleed out, but still maintains a perfect seal. If I do this, I will definitely make a DIY for everyone.

Re: How hard is it to replace a windshield?
I'd let someone else **** my girlfriend, before I let them drive my car.
If it comes down to it, its not that big a deal to shell out $400 to get it installed by a pro; I'd just like to try doing it myself.

Re: How hard is it to replace a windshield?
^ I hope that's an exaggeration. I know it's your car, but it's a civic for one. It's not like your driving a car worth 100, 000 dollars. I'd let someone drive my car to save 200 bucks in a second.

Re: How hard is it to replace a windshield?
Actually its not an exaggeration at all, but lets not get into that lol.
I don't like other people driving my car, because someone crashed my first car a couple years ago. A bit paranoid perhaps, but because of that, with very few exceptions, I don't let other people drive my car. The people I would trust are always to busy to help out with this.

Re: How hard is it to replace a windshield?
Thats the most epic thread I've ever seen on any forum. Absolutely hilarious.
I just got back from a body shop I had some insurance repairs done at last year; I explained to the owner that I'm in school and I am trying to save as much as possible for my fall tuition, and asked if he could give me a small discount over his quote if I removed/reinstalled some parts myself. The owner, offered to do it at cost on Friday if I bought his crew a case of beer, because his kids are in school. I got my windshield fixed, saved enough to pay for a textbook or two!

nice, but I can't believe you said that about your girl man lol. I feel you though. I don't let anyone else drive by car either. still, i'd let someone touch my car before laying a finger on my girl.
glad you got it fixed though ...just don't let your girl see this.

Re: How hard is it to replace a windshield?
She's read this whole thread already and thinks its hilarious. Lets just say, we have very relaxed boundaries in our relationship...
I'll take some pics of them doing the work on Friday if I can find my camera, just moved so its in a box somewhere.

Re: How hard is it to replace a windshield?
ive been installing windshields for 15 years attempting to dyi is f-ing retarded the windshield isnt only to keep the bugs out of your teeth its to help keep you in the car when a drunk driver crosses the lane and hits you head on. dont be a cheap *** drop a dime and get it done right.

Re: How hard is it to replace a windshield?
@irish bug: Your response is, so poorly written I`m not going to dignify it with a response. Go back to school and learn how to compose a sentence before trying to give me advice.
@lowlife: It would be difficult for a poorly installed windshield to affect the structural reinforcement of a vehicles roof. The windshield itself would still be in place, although there may be minor air leaks that would not compromise overall strength.
