Do I need a new transmission? Space/where do I go from here?

Hi everyone - I have a 2009 civic which I like a lot. I am the second owner - it has about 104K miles on it, most of them mine. This weekend the check engine light and flashing D light came on. And it also felt a little funky while I was driving and shifting. I searched this forum pretty thoroughly and read the other posts, so I understand this is likely a pressure switch issue (?), based on the code my mechanic read: PO843. This garage likes to send transmission issues to Aamco across the street, so that’s where my car ended up. According to Aamco, it’s not a switch issue because the transmission fluid looked very black and burnt and the car is skipping second gear when it shifts. They say I need a new transmission for $3200. Does anyone here see this differently or have any other recommended next steps? I have no reason not to trust the professionals who have shared this advice with me but I am not super knowledgeable about cars and frankly $3200 is a big chunk of change. I Appreciate any advice anyone can share. Thanks!

Take it to Honda and get a second opinion.

Make sure not to tell them anything about what the other shop said.

You want an unbiased opinion.

You could also try changing the fluid and seeing if it helps.

I would do the transmission fluid twice. Swap it. Drive for two weeks. swap it again.

You will save a lot of money doing the service yourself and it's pretty easy. Just make sure to check if you have a normal automatic transmission or a CVT, as they use different fluids.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Re: Do I need a new transmission? Space/where do I go from here?

AAMCO really NEEDS you to empty all of your pockets on their counter. You won't have any clue what work was really done in their shop, and they prey on that. Then about a month from now you will need to take out a loan and give them even more cash after the first batch of work doesn't fix anything.

Your CAR just needs the appropriate pressure switch replaced (per the code) and some basic fluid maintenance---using the correct fluid, of course.

YOU need to search for better mechanics..

Thanks, everyone! Yep - you guys were right: a new switch and changing the fluid twice seems to have solved the problem. I realty appreciate the forum’x good advice.
