Attempted Auto theft gone wrong.

Some one tried to pick the lock cylinder tumblers in my friends 04 Accord lx. Good thing is they didn't know the first thing about picking locks bad thing is they trashed the lock cylinder. Long story short, the steering column has been taken apart, lock cylinder has been removed. Engine will crank but won't start. He's selling it cheap because of this issue. What exactly would have to be done to fix the problem? How much would it cost?

Does he have comprehensive insurance? Did he file a police report?

key symbol flashing on the dash when you try to crank?
if so then there's a problem with the immobilizer,
could get replacement key and lock cylinder + immobilizer from the junkyard but then they'd had to be programmed to the ecu to start the car. (typically dealer only)

If the OP's friend had comprehensive would the above be covered (minus deductible)?

Comprehensive coverage is usually very reasonable and typically adds less than $10 a month for $100 deductible (possibly depends on credit score, home ownership and other variables?). My car's windshield has been hit by rock's twice this year a few months apart. In Florida it's mandatory for zero deductible repair or replacement through comprehensive insurance.
I chose repair on both because the repair tech said full glass replacement might lift some paint in the process. Also, it may reveal some rust (if present) under the glass that I don't want to deal with. Fortunately, no known leaks so far.

On top of that I'm pretty sure there's a sector of unlicensed, revoked, uninsured drivers on the road in every country.
So much so in America that most if not all states offer (optional) Uninsured Motorist insurance.

Someone seriously tried to pick the lock?......... Broke in and tried?

I bet the lock was already worn out and it jammed up when he stuck the key in, that's the usual issue I see all the time. Some people really f it up trying to make it work too.

To run and drive, you said the column lock is already removed from the steering column? Do:

Remove immobilizer ring and connect it to its wiring plug

remove electrical portion of ignition switch from the column lock, and connect the wiring for that switch.

Stick the correct programmed key through the ring of the immobilizer unit so it can read the chip in the key

Use a flat blade screwdriver to rotate the center of the ignition switch electrical half. Engine should start and run.

To fix the lock, it probably needs retumbled.
Might need a new key (depending on how much it's worn), which would have to be programmed to the car.

Replacement column lock is also possible but that would mean towing the car to a dealer for programming (or locksmith if anyone local to you does it) and multiple keys on the keyring

Re: Attempted Auto theft gone wrong.

The story he gave me was, he had parked it because his insurance ran out. Took him a coupe weeks to renew the policy. During that time Ida when the attempted theft occurred.

Ok, how much damage was done? Anything other than jamming tumblers?

If you can get the roll pins out of the lock to get it apart, you could remove the bad tumblers to make the lock work again
