is 17" too big?

Hello I'm kind of new to the forum. I have a 2004 Civic LX Coupe and I was looking into getting new rims. Are 17" rims too big? As in, do they effect anything else on the car? I'm completely new to cars and I'm clueless as to what size I should get. BTW i've also done nothing to the suspension, etc. So would I need to change this in order for the rims to fit properly? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Re: is 17" too big?

17s would be fine logistically speaking, as long as you keep the size of the tire down accordingly so that your total wheel diameter (wheel + tire) is around the same size as your stock. if you go much bigger, it can throw off your speedometer + odometer and cause some other issues.

Ahh i see. Thanks for the info guys, and I was looking at wheel and tire combos at www.wheelfire.com. Just wanted to know if anyone has delt with them before because they seem to have some really good deals. I would assume they would give you the accurate tire size with the wheels right?

I have never heard of them. I would check out tire rack and discount tire direct. I would not go bigger than 17" for street use. The proper size is 205 40 17 I believe, most sites will suggest the proper wheels to fit your car when you type in the car's model.

205/40/17 would make the speedometer off more than necessary. you would be going 57.5mph when your speedometer reads 60mph. 205/45/17 would be more accurate (59.5mph when speedometer reads 60). 215/45/17 would be even closer but you would be going faster than your speedometer says (60.4mph when speedometer reads 60).

Re: is 17" too big?

If the 2004 LX coupe started out with 195/60R15, then going up to 205/45R17 would be a 0.2% difference (or 0.1 mph faster than the speedo @ 60 mph), which is the closest combination I found for upsizing. I guess it could depend on what sizes are stock, or maybe what calculator is used. I brought this up because EFRue57 listed a different result than I got.

Re: is 17" too big?

i use 17's with a 205 40 17 tire its exactly the same size as the stock 14 with a 65 series tire goto your search box type in tire calculator it will tell you every spec you need to know 17's do weigh more and will slow you down a bit. I didnt care i just wanna be low and have big wheels i have the engine to push em so its all in what you want for your car...

Re: is 17" too big?

Here is my 03 EX on 17's. Not too big I could go up to 19's If I wanted.

I'm going down to 16's though. The thing I have learned is that in order to get the speedometer right, the tire must size accordingly to your stock steelies and by doing this, you will trade off smooth ride for exactness.

See if I can explain. The bigger your wheels are, the lower profile tire you need to exact your speedometer, the trafe off is that there is less tire between your wheel and the road and the bigger wheel you go, the more bumps in the road you feel and depending on the suspension the harder the ride. Not to mention that your more apt to bend the wheel on a speedbump or curb. My experiance.

I think the gap looks fine if its even. Unlike when the suspension is lowered, you tend to still have a gap on the sides, so it's kind of bell shaped, which looks less balanced than a unifom semicircular space. So maybe you'd need ground effects to hug the tire on the sides, in order to complete the gapless look, or bigass fenders which bulge outwards over the tires. Or am I missing something?

Werd, mine is lowered .75 which is just enough to get rid of the awkward gap from putting rims on. I definitly agree that some cars look weird lowered...
but its all in how you do it...

Re: is 17" too big?

yeah get 17's but lower your car or you will look like a jeep going down the road. And he didnt hook you up that much 1200 for a package is alot. Tire rack could of beat that deal by 300 dollars easily.

Re: is 17" too big?

I got some 17s recently and the ride was much improved over the stock 15s. I'd say it looks more like a rally car than a "jeep" on stock suspension, which is fine because I probably need that extra squish factor on real world bumps.

Re: is 17" too big?

I ran exclusively 215/45-17's from 2004-2017 on my (lowered) 2002 civic. 17s are fine.
