02 gauge cluster milage?

I was surfing around looking at the different gauge clusters for sale. I notice the sellers post the milage. Does that mean the milage is stored in the cluster?

So, I can buy one with what ever miles on it, take mine out, put the other back in, drive it for 50k miles, put mine back in and sell as a low milage car?

no wonder some of these salvage title cars have low miles.

Nope. That would be considered tampering, and is against federal laws. You are obligated to disclose true mileage at the time of sale (or state that true mileage is over 100k here). Also there should be a mileage change sticker placed in the door jamb if the odometer gets changed back to zero.

Document everything so you stay out of trouble.

(I forgot to swap the VIN tag on a dashboard replacement job one time, you wouldn't believe the hassle that customer went through at the DMV, and I had to get far more involved than I ever wanted to be.)

Wrong assumption, tampering with an odometer has nothing to do with it.

Figure out how easy it is for an insurance company to consider a car "totaled" or a write-off, or deny any further coverage and you'd see why this happens.
Also, different states seem to have different rules about this. It is far easier to do this in some areas than others. Still amazes me too.
