Well I have a serious problem hopefully some of you guys can help me diagnose my car. 95 Civic 5-speed, old, 284K. Was running very nice, then out of the blue the car just turned itself off, just quit. I had no lights or anything as if the battery was dead, opened the hood to check the cables because one had a tendancy to slip a little bit but they looked fine. Tightened them back to be sure though and the car fired right up and drove just fine, for 20 minutes. Then it happened again, it just quit. Won't turn over, won't make a noise. This time jiggling the cables had no effect. Took the battery to have it tested and it checked out fine. Still, the car won't turn over at all.

I guess the starter first of all but I'm confused how the starter could make the car just turn itself off while running fine. That doesn't sound like the starter to me. The no noise and no turn over sounds like the starter though. I'm confused, any ideas out there perhaps? Thanks in advance.

Well if yiu have to keep tightening the cables in the terminals my first suggestion would be to get a good set of terminals and solder the cables in them. That will take care of any questions with that. A starter wont cause it to quit once its running. No more information than i have i would first guess its the electrical part of the ignition switch. My second guess would be something in the distributor like possible the igniter. Hope this helps ya out a little

Had the same problem and it was the igniter, however I was able to crank the engine after it stalled - without getting it to start. So most likely it is like Racin97 says, the ignition or starter.

Does the main relay make 3 clicks when you turn the key to start?
