I dropped the catalytic converter and rest of the exhaust system a couple of days ago since it had attempted to escape a couple of days before that. when i went to pick up the new stuff at the auto parts store they had a pile of gaskets on the counter and i sorted through what they picked out and headed home. one of the things they said i needed was a steel ring about the size of the donut gaskets. actually they said i needed two but it didn't look like it from the diagrams they had so i left them there.
i mounted everything today and it's leaking like crazy.
i can pull it apart and use some sealer in the joints but are those rings supposed to be in there somewhere?

Are you saying that you left all the gaskets at the auto store and put the exhaust back together without them?

no, sorry for the confusion. it's a walker exhaust system and i used a donut with one flat side between the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter, a flat gasket between the cat and the middle/resonator pipe, and another donut with one flat side between the resonator pipe and the muffler.
there were two steel rings picked and the diagram showed them going at each end of the catalytic converter but i'm thinking that might have been for a different converter. the rings were about the diameter of the pipe and a little less than an eight of an inch thick.

It could be possible that you need them but I have never heard of them. Do you know exactly where it is coming from. I have a hunch if it is not the ring things that you are talking bout then its probably the donut gaskets. Have you made sure that you have really tightened that area.
