94 civic cold start

Hello all,

I am having problems keeping my 94 civic running on cool mornings. I just purchased it a few days ago, it has 218k miles and seems to be in good condition. it has new spark plugs, new wires, fairly new distributor and all belts/hoses.

The car will not stay running longer than 5-10 seconds. each time it dies, it takes a little longer to start back and eventually will not start at all(during which it fires some, but will not catch and run)

As I sit in the front seat starting it, I smell fuel, the exhaust is smoky and smells of fuel. Once I keep it running long enough to warm it up a little, it seems to run fine.

Once I drive it a few miles (it started happening around 30 miles down the road last night) the car starts jerking every few seconds. It is not severe, but it is definitely noticible.

I have aviation mechanic experience, but never on a honda so I don't want to rip into anything before I have suggestions.

Sorry for the long post, and thanks for any help.

*EDIT* The car is a 1994 Civic LX 1.5L 5speed

Now it will barely start at all. I have to have the throttle wide open for it to start, then it dies almost immediately. I did get a CEL one time it started.. but nothing since.

Re: 94 civic cold start

could be alot of things but its hard to know for sure. low fuel pressure (bad fuel pump), clogged injectors, dirty throttle body or idle air valve/fast idle thermo valve, to name a few.

Re: 94 civic cold start

Okay. We got it running perfect. Cleaned the injectors, set the timing (which was way off by the way).. she's purring like a kitten. We take it for a drive, and it hesitates(or pops) under acceleration. We drove it some more and it seemed great other than the popping. turn around and head back, i shift into 2nd gear and it falls on its face, dead. hard to start, not wanting to stay running when started. I got it running fairly smooth after a few tries(still popping, or missing?), but we make it home and re-adjusted the timing a bit. It runs fairly smooth, but you can hear popping in the exhaust.

I was so happy, now confused again.

Re: 94 civic cold start

I'm in the same boat, runs great when it's cold then slowly adds a bad miss with bucking and the occasional stall when accelerating with low rpms.
how did you get the injectors out? I think I'm probably in need of an O2 sensor or something that would control the mixture after it warms up as it seems to be loading up and running rough around town when it's warm.
With new plugs, distributor cap, rotor, coil, and fuel pump it pulls way better than it did when I got it last year but this rough running is driving me crazy.
regards,
bart

I am having a similar problem...try to reset your ecu and see if the car starts easier. Mine did, now I need to figgure out what changed that made it start (on the first try too).
