Weird Issue with Autoshifter Knob (1999 Civic Ex)

Weird Issue with Autoshifter **** (1999 Civic Ex)
Hey guys,
I've had a vexing problem for the last couple of months. My autoshifter **** popped off and I can't get it back on correctly. I can get the **** back on and tightened but when I do, the key will not come out of the ignition. Everything else about it feels right though, and I've already torn the console apart and cleaned that area pretty well, it was very dirty. Also I've replaced the A/T Position Switch, which I had heard could malfunction. It helped with a few other issues the car was having but not this. I would appreciate any advice given, trying to avoid spending $50 at a dealership just to put a **** on.
