98 civic idle problems

Ok so I have a 98 civic ex vtec 1.6L automatic, the problem is when I start my car it idles at around 2000-2500 but once I put it in drive it goes down to around 500 to 1000 and when I stop at a light it goes down to around 200 or sometimes even less and the car will shake and sometimes shut off the only wayI can prevent it from turning off is by giving it a little gas..I cleaned the throttle body plate the other day but its still acting up.it will act normal sometimes and only idle around 1000 ..and also the car usually turns off on my first drive of the day and for the rest of the day it won't turn off but it will still idle very low at stops.it annoys the crap out of me and I would like to know if anybody has had these problems and how they fixed it??and if anybody just knows anything please let me know.??.

try cleaning out your iacv to see if that helps if you dont know where it is its in the back of the motor kind of in the middle on top.... look up a pic and check it out... if you know what you are looking for you cant miss it

Re: 98 civic idle problems

You may need to try an idle relearn. Pop the hood open and open the fuse box under the hood. Remove the backup fuse about fifteen seconds then put it back (you'll lose radio stations). With radio/lights/air/everything else off, turn on the car and let it idle for ten minutes. Turn it off then see if it still does this.

Re: 98 civic idle problems

Ive had a 03 civic ex 4dr and i had IACV cleaned up, however i did not do the idle re-learn. i suppose i need to do that..its been over 2 mos now since my iacv cleaning.
is doing the idle re-learn now a good thing. or do one more clean & then do idle re-learn.

Re: 98 civic idle problems

The idle relearn is because the system 'learned' how to run with the conditions it used to have. The computer is still making the same adjustments it used to, despite the system having changed a bit. When things change, this can cause it to adjust incorrectly and idle high or low.

And yes, I do mean just leave it on. Do not press on the gas or breaks or listen to the radio or anything.

ADDITION: Do the idle relearn after a drive sometime. The engine should already be at normal temperature and turned off before you pull the fuse.

Re: 98 civic idle problems

my car simply shakes/feels weight on engine only when my A.c is on?
try cleaning up pressure regulator it will get you better idle!!!!!..not exactly solve problem, but thats what worked on mine. I however, also did a fuel filter strainer change and throttle body cleanup. Not to forget idle Re-learn after it.

Re: 98 civic idle problems

I did the idle relearn it didn't help so much,my car still stops on me it fluctuates from 0 to 1 rpm I'm gonna clean iacv tommorow if there's any tips you guys could give me that'll be greatly appreciated like what I'm going to have to take apart for the job to be easier..and also a picture of iacv would be cool too but I'm pretty sure I know where its at..it should be like connected to throttle body around there..right? Lol

Re: 98 civic idle problems

Alright so today I cleaned the iacv in my car and damn it was dirty real dirty but anyways I started the car after it felt like it was struggling a little at first but it turned on good but it was idling at 2000 then I'm not sure what my dad did in the hood but it started idling lower at about 1000 then I drove it to the store and it turned off on me cause it started idling real low,so then I got home and did idle relearn and its acting normal finally it stays at 1000 almost all the time it goes down a tiny bit sometimes but not to much..

Re: 98 civic idle problems

Take it for a spin of about 100+ mi and you will see all getting normal. In the first few days of cleaning iacv it did very little to change anything, however, putting on some miles made a huge difference.
