Re: Looking to buy civic
Which model is based on what you like IMO. as for what to look out for..
1.visual and noticable damage..check to see if parts are replaced
2. Mechanical problems have it looked at and ask what has been done
3. Avoid heavily modded cars..you never know if they did it right or took care of it..You may sink more money fixing it then driving it.
4. Test drive it..and take it to a mechanic you know or trust to inspect it.

Re: Looking to buy civic
I drive a '99 2 door 5speed base model (DX). If you do some googling around you'll find the 96-00 had very high approval rating amongst people who owned them.
I love mine. It's the grocery getter from hell. They have a front double wishbone suspension which was only done in these model years. So it has a very nice ride stock for a cheap price.
One thing I to remember when you're looking is you get what you pay for. I spent $4200 one year ago. Original stock everything, lowish mileage, one owner, Honda dealer maintained. The oil isn't even dirty at 6000kms nothing but regular maintenance in the first year. One like that now is about $3000 - $3500. You can probably find one for $2200 but if you have to make $1000 in repairs in the first year what have you really saved?
Just something to think about while you're car shopping.
P.S. check my Introduce yourself thread there's a bunch of pictures of what mine looked like when I bought it
