Unhappy Fuel Average

Hi,
I just bought a 2000 Civic DX. The motor is a 96 with only 40K in it. The car runs fine. I am getting only 22 mpgs. 35 psi tire pressure all around. I do 70 highway 30 city miles. No CEL's. I know I should get around 30+ mpgs.Would a tuneup (plugs, wires, air/fuel filter, caps and rotor) take it that far?
Thanks

Re: Fuel Average

If you haven't given the car a tune up, you should do so.

Re: Fuel Average

I'd check your plugs and see what they look like. I have a '99DX and it averages between 37-42 mpg.

I just did rotor, cap, and plug wires.

The cap and rotor didn't look too bad and the plug wires were about at a half life still somewhere around 12k ohms. My car has 175 000kms or just over 100k miles

So see what you can see with the spark plugs and test the plug wires with a multimeter under 25K ohms is within spec. Inspect the cap and rotor. Other wise it's more likely an issue on the fuel side.

Re: Fuel Average

Have done the tuneup. (Plugs, wires, rotor, cap and fuel filter). Improved the mileage by 2-3 mpg. Its giving around 24 mpg mixed use and 30mpg straight highway. I found the a big crack on the manifold around the o2 sensor. have ordered the replacement. let's see if the new manifold/cat boosts the mileage.
