1997 Civic HX - A/C comes and goes
Hey all, I appreciate any help you can give. I'm not much of a car guy, and there seems to be so many possible answers to this question. I'm lost.
On hot days, like this past week when it's been 90+, my A/C will work for about 7-8 minutes, then it will start blowing hot air, so I'll shut it off. After about 5 minutes, I can turn it back on and it will be as cold as ever, but it only lasts another 5 minutes before it's back to blowing warm air.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks!!!

Sure but, you have no way to measure exactly how much refrigerant you're putting in when working with 12oz bottles. Chances are you need a bottle and a half. How are you going to meter the second bottle when what you have just purges the entire bottle in about half a second. I wouldn't recommend doing it if you don't know exactly what you're doing. Just go pay $50 to have the A/C guy vac and re-fill the system.
Hi, just in case... check the a/c radiator fan, if it is functioning unproperly it'll stop and start randomly, when that happens the whole a/c system fails and... voila!! hot air right in your face mr. not to mention that the a/c compressor days are counted off so.... a couple smashes with a hammer and a screwdriver may help for a while but the best is to replace the fan if you can buy it separatedly.. i tell you, that problem is a silent enemy of your a/c compressor and sometimes is not that obvious so when you look inside the hood it seems to be spinning nice and fast but it isn't... a question: when the hot air blows, have you noticed a lowered rpm's just for a second ? if so, i'm rigth, if not.. well, i hope you have found the solution

Not only the a/c fan, but if you are a little low on coolant in the radiator, when the car starts to get hot the cp with kill the compressor to take that load off the motor. I noticed this on my 97 civic, added water and works fine

Thanks guys. I do still have the problem - been too busy to do anything about it. Xtian29, no, no lowered RPM's when the hot air blows...sounds like that's good news. This has only been a problem on really hot days, which I haven't seen many of yet. This week may motivate me to get this figured out... I'll post again after I take some action and see if my problem is solved.
