block heater install

I could use some help which bolts to remove and replace with the block heater.
94 civic dx
and
97 civic lx.

Can anyone with either of these vehicles take a picture or give an exact location where to install the block heater. my wife and i are moving up a little further into the northern country this winter.

any help would be appreciated.

Re: block heater install

I dont have a picture for you, but if youve done an oil change on it before you should easily be able to find the plug. First off, make sure youve drained the coolant in the radiator, and be prepared for about half a gallon of coolant to come out once you remove this plug, it will get all over you, trust me, I know, lol.

Anyway, up and to the right from the oil filter on the back of the block theres a 17mm (i think) nut on the plug. Its the only big bolt anywhere near the oil filter.

Hope that helps.

Re: block heater install

yeah all you are doing is replacing the coolant engine block drain bolt with the heater element bolt. i think you need to use some sort of gasket sealer on the bolt too. you cant miss it, its the only bolt in that area and you will really be sure when coolant comes out.

Re: block heater install

on the 94 dx, there is a drain bolt on the front of the engine next to the exhaust. Would that one be safe/effective to use?

Interesting, I never knew the D15B7 had the plug on the front, I assumed all d series were the same.

If thats the plug youre talking about, then yes, thats it, sorry for the confusion I really did think they were all on the back of the block.

Heres another view:

#17 is the drain plug and is on the front. Thats really weird, its still a coolant passage but i figured again that since it was still a D series block it would be in the same place...

Re: block heater install

that looks like the one i had in mind assuming that tube is the oil dipstick. Thanks for your response, it should be an easy enough job.

Are there any special instructions to get it done or would it be as simple as drain coolant, remove plug. insert block heater, route chord and refil/bleed coolant system.
