Tranny Problems
Tranny Problems
Hi y'all!! this is my first post and I'm sad that it is for the following purpose.
If it's in the wrong segment please excuse me as I'm a newbie here.
Six months ago I bought a 1999 Honda Civic EX auto 1.6L Vtec engine. It looked nice with a couple of details, it looked like it has a lot of potential so I nailed it. My mechanic and myself tested it, we ran it and it shifted nice but now everytime that rains or in a cold morning the car won't shift gears, I have to use the stick to get the gears(ie. use D4 for 1st, then hit 2 for 2nd, hit D3 for third and go back to D4 for fourth), after a while of doing this manual shifting the car regains full automatic shifting.
I'm assuming this might be an electronic failure.
Anyone had this problem?
thank you in advance.
God bless you all

Re: Tranny Problems
sounds like a problem due to cold fluid. hard to say but seems like a mechanical issue like a stuck solenoid. if it does it after the rain on a warm day, it could be electrical too. and that wont be easy to figure out. look for loose grounds in the engine bay.
Re: Tranny Problems
I would start by changing the fluid, I hear Honda fluid makes quite a difference. Then I would remove all the electrical conectors on the tranny, I think there are 3 or so, make sure they are clean spray them with contact cleaner and then apply dielectric grease before putting them back together. You should be able to get some at a local parts store.
I have a 98 Civic and the tranny went at about 280,000 kilometers, I bought a low mileage used one for $125 and put it in on a Saturday. Now it has 320,000 kilometers and runs well. Either way you should be able to get back on the road for not a lot of money. What area are you in?

Re: Tranny Problems
thank you! the tranny oil was changed 6 months ago and when it got changed the problem continued, now that it is due to change it again I'll try to get original Honda fluid.
how much would the Honda tranny fluid cost? any ideas?
thank you all for your answers!

Re: Tranny Problems
I forgot to mention, after reading this now I do a full 5minute warm-up, not just 1 or 2 minutes, and I've not had this problem as often in cold or rainy days.
With the winter coming, we'll see how does the new Honda Fluid works out.
