switching oil grades

On my 96 ex I am running 5w 30 to factory specs, if I want to go to 10w 30 will that cause problems. My reasoning is that I am leaking oil and the heavier grade will help a little?

Another question can you mix them both, say you have 5w 30 and need to add a quart of say 10w 30 will that cause problems?

Re: switching oil grades

I've switched to 10W30 on my 2003 civic because I thought that would mitigate my oil burning. It didn't solve the problem but nothing bad happened to the car. Still ran great only it was harder to start in the mornings and gas mileage went down a bit. I've also added differen't grades as I was low in oil and only had one of the other. Nothing happened and it still drives great. I just need to do more frequent oil changes to make sure I"m not too low. FYI i can go about 2500 miles before I need to add a quart. I have 136,000 Miles on the car.

Re: switching oil grades

On a 7th gen they recommend using 5w20 but it's better to use 5w30. Not sure about 6th gens but don't go too heavy. I'd try 10w30, don't mix them, that's a waste of time.

Re: switching oil grades

Never use stop leak. It plugs up all the small passages and restricts flow, possibly damaging the engine. Fix the issue rather than hide it.
