replacing stock stereo with head unit
replacing stock stereo with head unit
i dont really know much about cars at all, and after looking around i figured this would be my best bet as opposed to all the bullshit "tutorials" ive come across. I'd like to remove the stock stereo in my 2000 civic ex and install a head unit because my stock stereo scratches brand new cds and most of the time wont play them at all. im assuming ill need some sort of kit for the head unit to fit in but im not sure what kind or where the best place to get it would be. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks again.

You can go to www.crutchfield.com, if you spend over $129 they give you free shipping, dash kit and wire harness, plus install directions, even a girl can do it. The dash kit and harness is worth close to 30 bucks by itself.

+1
Probably a fuse.
I was playing around with the obd2 thing once and i accidentally shorted something (lol), and boom! my dome light didn't work, and the warning chime didn't either.
Turns out it was just a bad fuse.
Did you hear a pop sometime during the radio install ?

Re: replacing stock stereo with head unit
sorry about taking so long to get back to this, i dont remember hearing anything abnormal during the installation but how would i tell if a fuse was blown? would i just be sticking out further than the others?
Re: replacing stock stereo with head unit
You can guess by looking at your manual to see which fuse could be blown (for example, the 7.5amp "Instrument Lights" fuse would be a good culprit
).
Go under your steering wheel, to the left, and remove the fusebox cover. Locate the fuse puller. Grab fuse puller.
Locate the "Instrument Lights" fuse (On the diagram, fourth one from the top. In the actual fuse box, it's on the top row, fourth one from the right.)

Remove that fuse. Check to see if it's blown. If so, replace it with a same-amp fuse (7.5).
Alternatively, you can take out all the fuses and look at them to see if they're ruptured (not recommended), or even better, use a multimeter to test the fuses' voltage (using a multimeter prevents you from having to pull out each fuse, you can just test on the spot). Read up here.
If you do this make sure to check all fuse boxes (under-hood, under steering wheel, etc.)

Re: replacing stock stereo with head unit
It's all in the page i linked to.
Key in acc position (motor off but fan on).
Black to ground, red to each dot on the fuse.
If DC voltage is normal, then fuse is not blown.
But really, read the page. It's not long and it's really well explained !
