Question Header and Exhaust System

I have a 97 Civic LX with the 1.6 (no tec). The stock manifold is cracked (imagine that) so in the market to change some stuff out. Ofcourse I know on those d16y7 engines the cat is bolted right up to the stock manifold so it's either delete the cat or do headers all the way back with an ex header and exhaust system with a high flow cat. Basically I am ready to do all this so just trying to decide what is best for me, my car and my budget. I have found some headers that have a high flow cat attached to the manifold for the d16y7 engine but seem a little pricey to me and it looks as if I could do a whole ex system for almost the same price. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to e-mail me as well bcashio@gmail.com

Thanks Bo

Re: Header and Exhaust System

I think you'll be better off doing a ex style header (aftermarket or not), an OEM EX cat (assuming you dont have a turbo, supercharger, cam, nitrous, or any other high power modification on your car), and an aftermarket exhaust. Buy the header used, and cat used with low miles. You'll save money and be able to sport some aftermarket "fun" parts on your car- aka the exhaust, which adds that extra spiff to your ride. Avoid changing to an EX OEM catback, its pretty much the same stuff that your currently running and very unimpressive= cost> 0 benefit.

Re: Header and Exhaust System

I read your header/exhaust thread while in the process of waiting for a reply. Very good stuff by the way. Just with the miles that are on it now (142,000) I would rather just put all new stuff in. I could go for just a stock manifold and be done with it which I found at Napa where I used to work which didn't have a cat on it but I don't have any cel (yet) so I know my cat is still ok. The more I sat and thought about it I was like let's just do the whole thing. I did a similar thing to my 94 Accord LX when I had it. Full exhaust, no cat, and headers and was really impressed with the results and had a CAI on it as well. On this car though I don't want to get rid of the cat just put a high flow cat in. So, in your mind what do you think is the best move? I was thinking aftermarket headers, high flow cat, and exhaust system. I'm also seeing what CAI I want to throw in it and I found a kit that the filter mounts on the front like the intercooler does on turbo setups...how do you feel about those? Thanks for your help!

Re: Header and Exhaust System

Please post a link to this intake your talking about (with pictures)

I think high flow cats arent going to get you better results unless your rocking a high power system that NEEDS to be able to breath better. Keep the cat on there regardless tho. I use to run race headers- they were cool and all, but the smell of the exhaust was ridiculous because there wasnt a cat. Windows down in traffic... bad idea. Keep a cat in your system. If you wanna run a high flow cat over an OEM, go for it, but an OEM cat with 50-60k miles on it or less will be fine. Dont buy anything used with more miles on it. I would go for a used OEM cat with <60k on it over a brand new NAPA cat anyday. The catalyst in the OEM version is far superior to what they use in most cheap auto parts store cats.

http://www.streetstyler.com/Arospeed...AirIntakes.htm
I have found this at 2 different sites the only difference is on this arospeed it comes with a cover for the filter in case it's raining or what not so you don't suck up a bunch of water. Personally I feel this system might have better results seeing it can pull more air at the front of the vehicle instead of most that put the filter down in the wheel area. I couldn't get a pic to post on here but the link takes you right to it. Here is the other web link I found as well. http://www.advancedjdmparts.com/prod...roductid=16486

Re: Header and Exhaust System

well before you get a chance to tell me i have already answered my own question haha. performance wise it won't be any different but as far as looks are concerned it does look good and not a lot of people have them. i'm not looking to fool anyone that looks like im running a turbo with an intercooler but at advancedjdm i can get it for 88 bucks....pretty good deal i think.

Re: Header and Exhaust System

The filer is probably of low quality, and I'm not sure there is any place you can get a replacement for it.

It looks like a gimmic- replicating a intercooler on a turbo car. I think it will attract more attention then its worth. You'll probably have to cut away some of your bumper to get air to flow to it correctly. And its pretty low... even with a cover, I think water will be an issue. Just think about how much water hits your windshield when you drive... now imagine all of that headed towards your engine. If it was a superior design, all the other big brand companies that make intakes would have made a product similar.

All in all, I'd say dont buy it. Plus streetstyler has a horrible reputation.

Re: Header and Exhaust System

yea the water would be an issue but that's in all cai intakes probably just more so with this one being on the front. now i may be wrong but researching all the intakes are really about the same you pay more for the big name people is what it looks like to me but if i'm wrong please tell me! i don't mind throwing money into this thing as long as i know i am doing it right. so which intake you think would be the best for me and on the header/exhaust system...i would need a header, high flow cat, then the cat back exhaust right?

Re: Header and Exhaust System

i was looking at getting the V2 but don't see it offered for automatic and i read your post on the intakes...so seeing that you have a v2 intake would it work on mine or not? i just don't see the trans on these two engines d16y7 and d16y8 being that much different as far as size.

Re: Header and Exhaust System

i stumbled across this forum while researching my recent buy, I went with the 4-2-1 Megan Racing headers/ with the 2 bung for the o2 sensors. great product thick stainless steel much better quality then the other comparable and cheaply priced competition. Dont cheap out on after market parts, the civic is already cheap enough
