bad igniter/distributor

So I was driving into my neighborhood the other day and I stopped at a stop sign. As I took off the car died. It was dark so I had it towed to my house and was gonna look at it the next day. So the car would turn over but it wouldt catch at all. So I pulled a spark plug and noticed there was no spark. So then I opended the distributor and tested to see if my coil was bad, I ended up finding that my igniter was bad. So a few problems here. I stripped a screw and can't get it out. It is one of the wires connecting the coil in place. Any suggestions? And, upon installation of the new igniter, when I put everything back together do I have to do anything special or be super careful? Thanks!

Re: bad igniter/distributor

you need to set the ignition timing again when removing/installing the distributor.

I can't even get all of the components out! These screws are so prone to strip its ridiculous. I have all of the different components out, but now I am left with two screws on the bottom of the ICM. I almost stripped one already, and it was getting dark so I called it quits for the night. I need some serious help lol. Never had so much trouble with screws.

Re: bad igniter/distributor

hit up a hardware store and look for extractor kits. if you have room, you can drill the screw and use a reverse bit to pull it out. should always spray old screws with penetrating spray too like pb blaster to free them up.

Re: bad igniter/distributor

I thought u had to use pb blaster when the screw is out, like preventative maintainence. And these two certain screws can't be reached by my drill would there be enough room to use an extraction kit?

Re: bad igniter/distributor

if there is space for screwdriver, then maybe. pb blaster soaks into the metal and around the screw threads while the screw is still installed. you have to let it sit for a while tho after spraying. it might still help you if the screw isnt totally stripped.

Re: bad igniter/distributor

Actually, I got the two stripped screws out, but it took me four hours!! So I surely don't wanna eff this one up. I'm gonna grab some pb blaster later then

dont forget new screws too lol. and yeah spray some pb even in the screw holes before assembling everything. it will keep them from getting stuck next time.
