Grr! What's that SRS light always doing on?

On my 1997 Honda Civic EX, the little red oval "SRS" light is always on, and never goes off. The whole time you are driving the car, it's there. Little things that are wrong with my car just bother me until I fix them. I guess I am just that way. Anyway, does anyone know what causes it to stay on all the time, and how I can fix the problem?

On my mustang I found out if that light was on, (or any Ford at all) then the airbag was not going to function in the event of an accident. I hope that is not the case here...

yeash airbag does not work if the light is on, this is true for any car. usually means theres a problem with the system or one of its parts. first try resetting the light, see if it goes away. sometimes stupid things happen like if a switch was disconnected or also when jumping the car, and its really not a problem.

Re: Grr! What's that SRS light always doing on?

How does one go about resetting the light? My car diagnostics tool can do it but only on 2001+ OBD2 vehicles, for some reason. The older OBD2 doesn't send a signal for the airbag malfunction and thus my little computer can't disable it or reset it. I tried disconnecting the battery for while but it came back on almost immediately after hooking it back up.

there are some diy around here, doesnt always work tho. dealer has a special tool, we have paperclips lol. srs is different from the check engine light, a code reader for obdII wont help/.

Re: Grr! What's that SRS light always doing on?

Well I have one that is pretty expensive and does a lot of stuff that I don't even know how to do. Reading the codes is just one thing it does but I had heard that it can also turn lights on and off. But according to the manual it can't do that SRS light cause the OBD2 version is too old or something. Of course. So I will probly just cut the cord to that light when I am installing the LED's heh. I love my car and all, but no way I am going to pay the likely ridiculous sum to actually properly fix the problem. Probly have to do a bunch of work and buy some expensive part. Don't get me wrong I'm no stranger to DIY, but for this... ugh.

no it wont reset srs light. airbag isnt too important anyway, seatbelt is all you need. alot of times airbag does more harm.

Re: Grr! What's that SRS light always doing on?

There was a thread put on that has you warm the car up (go for a short drive, then take out (2) fuses under the hood and let your car set for 15 minutes. Then you reinstall them, get in the car and touch nothing but the ignition key to start the car. Start the car let it idle and shut it off... Then restart it and all the ECU codes are cleared out. Just unhooking the battery does not work! This resets all the engine related, SRS, ABS systems. It worked on our Honda(s) as once you interrupt the individual car systems the default code is stored. Hope it helps...
