big problem, loud clanking, engine light

so i was driving on the highway when all of a sudden i felt something that felt like a transmission slipping, except i was in low rpm's and it wasnt ready to shift. Following this, was a clanking noise that only happened when acceling...i noticed a tremendous loss of power though but my car could still make it home cuz i wasnt far away. Once i got it home i popped the hood and the noise sounded like it was coming from the block or lower and i smelt a hint of burning oil. so i checked the ground and no oil was coming out

i have a 1998 honda civic ex automatic

any ideas?

either sounds like a broken timing belt, distributor (which could throw the timing off), or some other internal engine problem. have that light checked with a scanner to see what code its giving.

Don't know offhand, but I had a similar problem with mine about 2 years ago. 5th gear at highway speeds, heard a strange knocking start, started slowing down and it got louder. Then there was a loud crack, all lights on the dash popped up and the power of the car went bye-bye. Pulled over, found a hole in my oil pan and found cause was a thrown rod. Goodbye engine.

Here's hoping that's not what happened with yours, but the symptoms are somewhat the same. Clanking noise for me though, was all the time, as soon as you turned the car over it did it.

Good luck.

yeah the clanking is all the time...when it starts up ....idling u cant hear it...and touching the gas u can again

i noticed last night that oil was coming out of my pan!...so i drained the oil (only had a qt or two left in it) ....tightened up all the bolts to the oil pan, and put more oil in it...the sound diminished a little bit but was still there
