Question 98 hatch: where to start?

So I know next to nothing about tuning. That's established. The other disclaimer is that I live on my own, with my own expenses, and I have only 'decent' credit, so I can't afford the ridiculous sort of machine that we all dream about. Pressing on...

Since I'm not going to be keeping the stock engine, power mods would be pointless and an unnecessary expense.

Which is why my first project is slated to be a suspension/wheel swap. I'm thinking Rota Slipstreams 15x7 +28 since its the only wheel I've found that fits my style, budget, and doesn't leave me with less clearance. For the suspension I'm thinking Tein Super Street Dampers but I don't know what else I'd need to get the suspension up to snuff.

Any experiences/tips/recommendations?

What does "up to snuff" mean? How do you plan on using your car? Drag, auto-x, daily driver? Lot of highway or back road driving?

Starting your build with tires and suspension is a good idea.

I guess by "up to snuff" I meant a desirable, reasonable level of responsiveness and control. Better than stock, of course.

Thanks for the response.

Re: 98 hatch: where to start?

Things that you could to to improve the suspension is to add lowering springs, front and rear roll bars, and front and rear upper tie bars. This will make the car stiffer and cause it decrease the angle that the car will tilt when you take corners. Aftermarket dampers and springs are not all the same and may make for a bumpier ride.

Hm, okay, so the damper kit isn't necessarily going to do much other than lower the car. Thanks, I'll keep researching.

Re: 98 hatch: where to start?

No. Springs lower a car, not dampers. But both will contribute to how your car reacts to bumps.

Unhappy Re: 98 hatch: where to start?

So, here's my shopping list for August.

TEIN S-Tech Springs
TEIN Super Street Coilover Kit
ROTA Slipstream 16x7/40
TOYO Proxes 4 205/45/16ZR

I think I'm missing a lot.

Tie Bars? Any suggestions?
Sway Bars? Was thinking Tanabe Sustec, but I don't know...they only have a rear bar...

Also, the wheels will reduce my inner clearance by 11mm. What kind of problems will that kind of difference cause?

Should I scrap this plan?

coilovers are spring and shock replacements- so you wouldnt need the stech springs on top of the SS coilovers. To be honest, I used to really want the SS's but they are really over priced. I think I'm going with megans to save myself a few hundred bucks- pretty much the same stuff, rebuildable and fully adjustable with ride height and dampening. Check them out.
