Today I bought a 2003 with the d17a2 motor. It has a new clutch and exhaust. I’m looking to get the most out of a budget of about $1000. What should I do to get the most horsepower? (I’m aware the d17 motor isnt the best but i’d like to see what i could do with it)

Upgrade your suspension, you won't be able to really do anything with the engine unless you turbo it and that's way more money

Turbo if you want to stay with the D17. K swap if you want to stay NA or turbo k swap for big numbers. Both of those options are way over $1k.

or try to find an used Crower Stage 1 cam. (discontinued)
They are starting to grind stock cams, but no one have a good idea how they perform yet.

the $1000 would best be spent on maintanance on a car that old,

replace your timing belt, water pump, coolant, and tranny fluid if you dont know when any of that was done last,

save the rest for repairs, your likely going to need it for control arm bushings, ball joints, brakes, etc etc

Yupper, 1k sounds about right for all maintenance for a new to someone Gen 7. I should be finishing up equipping my new to me 2002 LX with ~130k miles with ~$1150 worth of new parts to replace the aged / neglected bits and pieces tomorrow. It has now officially cost me more in parts than it did to buy it :P Although, Still a great deal for me in my book

Definitely worth taking care of any time / mileage maintenance straight away!
