Firewall runing cables (No AC hole?)
Firewall runing cables (No AC hole?)
2002, 2 Door civic, standard. Base model, No AC.

Hello, I am trying to run 3 telephone style cables through the firewall. So I need a good size hole. I found a massive one in the firewall. What is it from?
I'm guessing this is where something is routed if you have AC, I do not have ac. On the inside is a large plastic chamber, at least 6" deep.
Can I drill downwards in this chamber to get into the car and route cables, and later seal it with silicone. Or is the a high temp area and not a good idea?
I attached a photo of the covered hole, and the removed plastic cover.
Is there a better place to run cable, this spot looks really nice. Any dangers in damaging anything in this area?
All help is appreciated!

Telephone style cables? are u trying to put in a boost control or something?
I would drill below steering column next to brake pedal
Since thats easy to access from inside cabin, and thats where everyone drills for amplifier installs

I am hardwiring a radar detector in. So the 2 laser receivers and the radar box go near the bumper. They have telephone jacks to connect to the main system inside the car.

Re: Firewall runing cables (No AC hole?)
There's a grommet a foot or 2 down that has nothing going through it. I have a 0AWG wire going through mine.

This picture was taken with me standing forward of my battery, looking down into the engine bay.

for reference of the thickness of the wire, it's 13.61mm (0.54") with the insulating jacket(s).
edit: if you pull back the carpet in the passenger footwell area on the inner side, close to the center console, you'll see it.

xRiCeBoYx thank you for the photos!. I looked on mine and I think there are wires running from the battery through there. I have to double check in the day light. Please post more photos if you have time. The cable you showed is perfect size, I'm sure I can get everything through in the same space.
Kennykid2002, I went overboard and got the Escort Passport 9500ci $1200 from eBay. I have fried a few radar detectors with hot sun during summer and blasting heat to defrost the windshield in the winter. With a hardwired one, It wont be subject to those problems. I'm hoping it will last 6+ years instead of only 3.
This radar detector is not a "quick install" model. For me drilling the firewall is time consuming, everything else will be fun and easy to run a few wires. You have to drill with a quick install also.

If I remember, I'll snap some pics tomorrow. I used a fishtape to fish it through, and it pops into the passenger footwell area, a few inches outward from the center console, underneath the carpet. I'm sure you can find more pictures if you search, but it'll probably be a pain to look for it.

I was hoping that it was under 300! haha
It's like 1/8th the value of your car
Drilling through a firewall takes less than 30 seconds, its as brittle as bread in our civics
Please let me know the results of your detector, i hope that $1200 will save u more in the long run :P
