anyone got some efficient ideas for a d17? i want a little bit of power gain

Intake and exhaust... then step up to a Crower stage 1 cam in a d17a2 head if you want more power.

I have a DX If i swap heads i want to go stage 2 with the cams And i already have an AEM adjustable cam gear. I know i need new valve springs and retainers. Do i have to get something to tune it, or will a vtec controller be able to do it? Im not saying to get the best out of the cams. Just will I be able to get some good gains for daily driving. Sorry to thread jack.

A vafc2 wont do much for a stage 2 cam except allow you to play with the vtec point easily.

You need a way to tune it that gives you access to vtec point, afr, and rev limit. The vafc2 is no dice.

Also! Alot of that depends on whether you want to go turbo. Then that changes the game. Don't worry about getting things that you want keep when you switch to turbo. like cold air intake's or Headers/exhaste. Your gonna have to change those anyways. It just slows you down from your goal if you trying to get the funds together to tubro charge. like I said it depends on whether you want to go turbo or not.
