Open down pipes on my Em2?
Re: Open down pipes on my Em2?
all cons
1.way to loud infact illegal
2.sounds like ****
3.no back pressure
4.depending on cat location check engine light and all the problems that go along with that run rich, limp mode etc etc
5.smog
i cant think of any good reason to do this.

Re: Open down pipes on my Em2?
i say u should run open header like a boss
Edit: but really, its ridiculously loud. my friend's got a 300zx turbo that we've been working on with just the small little downpipe off the turbine and you can hear it from, no joke, 2 miles away. it sucks on the highway

Re: Open down pipes on my Em2?
alright lets get the facts striaght here.
you have an NA motor so you should not do this due to the fact that your motor is going to require some back pressure for the "scavenging effect". the reason why your friends 300ZX turbo can run huge open exhaste is because his turbo creates the back pressure that's require. also back pressure is bad for turbo cars because it can cause reversion and cause damage to the turbo unit. should this be done on the D17? no unless you have a turbo charged car. Emission's reason and also fuel reason as well. you'll get alot of check codes and you car will lose power. On my Supra I run a 3" from the turbo's back with a high flow cat but I don't require the to hold back pressure. if you want some more information on this let me know and I can look it up further in some of the books that I have for exact information.

correct, yes. though, my friend's not running just the downpipe for the purpose of making power. it's just how he bought it and we don't have a b pipe for it. and for some reason, i'm thinking backpressure would be bad for the scavenging because scavenging works by the creation of a partial vacuum by the outgoing exhaust pulse and backpressure works against that. also, having a longer exhaust would allow lower backpressure due to the exhaust gas aka fluid flowing thru the pipe rather than the open 14.7psi atmospheric pressure
