Does Redlining damage your car.
Re: Does Redlining damage your car.
Lmao so true...nothing like a test drive on a new civic with only 18 miles on it and going from 5th to 2nd gear because I'm not use to a close ratio gear box. Talk about some neck pain.

its harder on the gears to force it by shifting the gear select. try to avoid it and leave the car in a lower gear like d3 if you are driving in hilly areas then you wont have to worry about downshifting.

'05 stopped pulling when I hit redline. Was pulling out of a parking lot and someone came careening down a hill and around a corner, so my mind was more on "OH CRAP" and accelerating to avoid getting hit. Didn't notice I was gonna hit redline until about 1/2 a second before. When I hit, the transmission wasn't pulling anymore. I went into neutral, shifted back into gear, and everything was fine. I guess it cuts you off before you blow the engine?
Stupid story from my youth:
First car I had was a '92 Escort. Not like the new pieces of crap they were putting out at the end, the '92s had some ***** - not even the '06 Lancer I used to have felt as strong. Smoother yes, but the Escort stock would prolly win.
Anyways - before I knew jack about cars, I took that auto transmission and "experimented." I found that by shifting to one of the Ds it got louder and accelerated faster. About two months later I couldn't get into first gear and ended up getting the transmission replaced. Wasn't until I started learning about cars that I found out I was just straining my lower gears.
How's that for stupid? Oh well - learn as we go.
