Does Redlining damage your car.

Ok guys,

Random post i know, but i look after my car i dont rev it from cold i dont do all the things your not supposed to do.
I change my oil reguarly i check my engine most days.... you know just genrally look after it.

So my question is does redlining it hurt? i had a race this morning with a silly fiesta.
I obviously won but i got really bad wheel spin in first (got a wicked shoot off the lights) but i rev limited in first a few times as the wheel spin faded off the i hit the top speed for first and changed to second which also got me wheel spin, and again rev limit but i backed off and it got grip.
Now i just want to know will this severly damage my engine? i dont like doing it but i was a bit tired and just wanted to win!

Now i know a fair deal about cars and limits are there to stop damage but you know i just dont like to hurt my civic lol.
Thanks guys'

Tom

I'm sure you don't wanna run it in the red all the time, but I don't think an occasional mishap will hurt. That's why there is a rev limiter.

Thats what i was getting at, i mean obviously i dont redline it all the time mostly spent in 5th doing between 1500-3300Rpm but i do occasionally redline it never limiter it,
apart from the occasion this morning....

Re: Does Redlining damage your car.

the limiter is to make sure you dont go PAST redline, which will instantly damage the motor. otherwise these motors are made for high revs, the only thing constant redlining will do is maybe throw off the valve clearances which can always be adjusted. i know quite a few people beat on their cars and havent had problems. i dont suggest doing it every day, but it certainly wont hurt anything. these arent neons were talking about that blow motor in one race.

Re: Does Redlining damage your car.

ur fine man. that rev limiter is there from the manufacturer to fool proof your driving. .

other than doing the high revs and throwing that oil around lol. look at the pros on track nights out here. most of the guys will race once...then wait a while to let their car cool down before throwing it on the track again. its okay to be in the "zone" every once in a while...just as long as it doesn't become your new driving style lol.

same goes for automatics and people downshifting with them (throwing it in low or second lol)

if the manufacturer didn't think it was safe, your car wouldn't let you do it.

Re: Does Redlining damage your car.

How do you know if you have a rev limiter? I have a '97 Ex. -Manual trans if that matters...

-Thanks

Re: Does Redlining damage your car.

rev really high and see if it tells you

civicplaya 04-21-2009 09:49 PM

Re: Does Redlining damage your car.

What's supposed to tell me?

lightningslp77 04-21-2009 10:49 PM

Re: Does Redlining damage your car.

lol if you can get the needle all the way into the red zone then ur car might have been tuned and the rev limiter removed.

example...spoon motors. those are ridiculous.

gearbox 04-21-2009 11:10 PM

Re: Does Redlining damage your car.

rev limiter doesnt work ofcourse if you have a manual and you shift into a low gear while moving fast already and it revs above redline = goodbye motor.

^^^ahaha^^^^

yeah, not gona lie, I do sorta beat on my car, usually take it to the redline a few times a week a few shifts a week....okay, maybe more in the summer when there's races everyday...the motor is gettin a lil older tho, 127K, any idea if its gona catch up to me? It had a relatively easy life before about 90k when I got it..

Re: Does Redlining damage your car.

usually the motor is the last thing to fail. im sure other things will take the abuse and fail first like suspension, trans, etc.

Re: Does Redlining damage your car.

Ok thanks guys, think i need a new clutch soon though, my realease bearing sounds louder then normal.

Clutch is good though, plus really need to sort my g/box oil (memo to self MUST CHANGE THIS WEEKEND)

Least i know limiting isnt to bad. It just makes me feel like a idiot i mean all the idiots in small cars over here always drive around with big exhausts and 1.0l engines hitting rev limts :O very annoying.
Does anyone civ here make a clicking noise from the injecters? did it from when i got it just wondering if they need cleaning or anything.

Cheers again apprciate the help ya'll

Tom

I don't hear clicking from mine, but that doesn't mean they are all silent. Both my supra's used to click. Turbo'd and NA'd. The motor was so quiet and smooth but the injectors clicked.

Re: Does Redlining damage your car.

Im one of those people who beats the crap out of my car. Ive never blown an engine except when I was turbo pushing 280whp. I redline it at least a few times on every drive I take lol. You wont blow a stock engine by doing that unless its cold or you run it low on oil.

Re: Does Redlining damage your car.

clicking is just the valve tap, normal. and yeah, most cars have engine problems from people beating on it before everything is warmed up.

Re: Does Redlining damage your car.

well the do it in fast and the furious so i dunno...:giggle:

Never do that so i think i'm ok, anyway... if it does valve tap is that anything to worry about?

My last Civic never tapped...
Does anyone find there car a little lumpy from cold with an induction kit? i have had mine off through the winter only put it back on last week, and it was a cold night last night... and it was lumpy this morning like jerky and i dunno just felt like it was struggling on fuel a little bit... but once temp was of the C it was totally fine.
Strange ehh!!

Only happened since i had intake back on,

It runs fine, no smoke... i cant really explain its just coz its cold like when you press throttle a tiny little bit more is needed to push it past 1500 revs then normally.
It's not lumpy as such i dunno... i'll do some reasearch and let you guys know.

So whats the clicky injector thing then?

krarnold 04-27-2009 09:14 AM

Re: Does Redlining damage your car.

The clicky injector thing? If you can't figure it out and it's not hurting anything, its an upgrade. Call it heavy duty ultra performance cammed out awesomeness.
