can anyone tell me where the diy black out headlights thread is? i've been lookin but i found one for tail lights and all it was was just tint spraying the outside of the lens. also, what is considered a blacked out headlight? taking the headlight apart and painting the housing black or taking it apart and tint spraying the inside of the lens?

You'll highly reduce the light output of the car. My dad has a civic and, like my own car, they dont have the best headlights. I'd leave it alone if I were you.

plus blacking out your headlights is overplayed and tacky, IMO

If your going to black em out use the film instead of diy anyway. u can always remove the film if u dont like it, get too many tickets,almost die because u cant see **** at night....ect.Spray that stuff on you'll have to replace em.

Usually blacking out the headlights is blacking out the housing. Sanding it down and spraying it whatever color you want.

i just used some RC tint spray from a local hobby shop, worked like magic and still can see perfectly through it.

i had heard of people taking that tint spray and spraying the outside lens' but how long does that last? and how many coats did you use?

ya thats exactly what i did, it took about 5 thin coats because i didnt want to take a chance with dripping. and then after i used a clear gloss that is ok for outside use. ive washed it and everything, still on fine.

You're giving this guy completely the wrong idea, if you're spraying **** onto the outside if your headlight you're simply a moron. You have to put the headlight in the oven, melt the glue, take it apart, paint the trim piece inside (NOT the chrome reflector) and seal it all up again.

That's just the long way. works if you clean it and just spray on outside if you don't wanna deal with removing thr bumper and taking apart your lights. mine have been fine for a while now

This isn't the short way, it's the lazy way. Get in there and do it properly. I can take a bumper off in under 5 minutes.

i had heard both ways, but as far as doing it on the outside i was concerned about how it holds up as far road debree such as dirt, rocks, bugs, etc...a guy i work with told me the best way to do it was to put the lights in the oven at warm (200 degrees) for 5 minutes after its done preheating then take them out, pop off the metal tabs, grab a flat tip screwdriver and razorblade, pry the assembly apart enough to fit the blade in there and cut the sealant, tape off the chrome part of the housing then sand it all down and paint it black (or whatever color you want) then put it back together, using clear silicone sealant or aquarium sealant if needed. he said he's done 6 sets of lights so far and never had to use new sealant, he just put them back together and didn't have any problems. wouldn't hurt to use the sealant just in case to be on the safe side, thanks for all yalls input though, i appreciate it

thats pretty much bang on, fiend. thats the proper way to do it. thats the way i did it when i removed my amber reflector. its not really all that much more work. i mean you can do it all in a matter of hours. its WELL WELL worth it. the next day and month and year you will be so much happier you did it properly.

make SURE you do what dex said and make sure you do not harm the chrome inside. its extremely important, otherwise you wont see **** from your headlights. just black out all the trim (anything you know the light will not reflect off of) and you will be in good shape. when it comes to putting them back together, i closed mine up and they more or less glued back together on their own for the most part. that black stuff is like a sticky gum tar type stuff and its pretty cool. i still went over the entire seam with exterior window and door silicone though and i havent had a problem with anything.

dont do anything on the outside of your headlight, dont spray anything or sand or even touch it. you will just cause problems for yourself. not to mention if it doesnt look like **** when youre done, it will probably look complete **** a couple months down the road.

ive seen dex's done this way in person and they look immaculate. youll be happy if you do it this way.

right on, any suggestions on what to use when you tape off the chrome? i was thinking painters trim tape stuff, it tapes areas off but not sticky enough to leave a residue, also, what type paint do yall use?

nevermind what i last said, i found a discussion about this in another thread and answered all of my own questions, gonna try and do it friday after i pick up my tires and put my new rims on!!!
