Speedometer Busted

My speedometer and odometer stopped working yesterday and it's pissing me off. My alternator fuse died so I replaced it but still no go. I have a dx to ex exhaust swap and I had to buy o2 sensor extensions. I read on here that crimped O2 wires can cause your speedo to go bad. I found this remeedy on here but I'm a little confused with step #2. Which lighting switch are they referring to?

Try this:
1. Push and hold the trip/reset button.
2. Turn the lighting switch on.
3. Turn the ignition switch on.
4. Within 5 seconds, turn the lighting switch OFF, then ON and OFF again.
5. Within 5 seconds, release the trip/reset button, then push and release the button 4 times repeatedly.

This starts the Gauge cluster self diagnostics.
The beeper will sound, the lights will flash, the LCD will flash, and most importantly, the needles will sweep all the way back and forth. If they/one does NOT sweep properly, replace the cluster.

Is there a specific specific fuse for the odometer and speedometer I should test? I looked in the underdash fuse box but there was no fuse for the VSS, is that fuse somewhere else?

Re: Speedometer Busted

I have checked every single fuse under the hood and under the dash. I got the diagnostic to work which is pretty cool btw. I did it multiple times and on some occasions all the gauges will rise, hit about 50% drop back down to 0 then go all the way and back to 0. Is there a reason for this fluctuation? On most occasions though the gauges will just rise 100% then back down.

Re: Speedometer Busted

almost sounds like a loose connection. play with the wires going to the cluster and see if any are loose

Re: Speedometer Busted

I will do that, I am going to also replace my engine bay ground wires just to be safe. Do the wires for the cluster get loose randomly? For some reason when my o2 sensor failed I got the car scanned and I also got a code for the VSS. But I replaced the O2 sensor, reset the ecu, put in a new alternator fuse, and the VSS code is non existent. So I don't think the VSS is bad, and according the cluster diagnostics the speedo works.

Re: Speedometer Busted

well its weird, my oil light never worked until i disconnected the battery for some other reason, then it suddenly worked lol. so idk something to try. just open the cluster bezel and see if all the wires look okay and arent loose and everything is mounted correctly.

Re: Speedometer Busted

Hopefully it's just a loose connection..I will avoid taking this sucker to the dealership at all costs. I need new terminals and grounds anyway so I have a Thursday afternoon project.

Re: Speedometer Busted

Pull the clip off the VSS and clean the connections, you may have bumped something. But honestly it sounds like a bad connection at the cluster. Like Steve mentioned, pull the cluster out, check the connections for corrosion. The O2 sensor and VSS sensor should not have anything to do with each other, and you've just got some freak coincidence that it happened at the same time.

Oh, and I'm still thinking about the head!

Hang on. I'll pull the diagnostic for the VSS and email it to you.

Re: Speedometer Busted

Update: This Bitch is fixed. I open the cluster and tightened all the connections. Put on new battery terminals and new grounds. Works like a charm. Clint I left the VSS diagnosis as a last ditch effort and luckily it never came to that, but thx for the pdf though, I will keep it for future reference.
