hey guys i searched on the forum and found some info about timing belt change and the recommendation when should be changed but not the answer i was looking for....so i was wondering what is the recommendation mileage to change the timing belt on our cars? and i took my car the the mechanic cause i had a short in the wire and they fixed it then they told me that i need to have my timing belt changed and my power steering fluid flushed.....the question is idk if i really need to change it till the recommendation of mileage to change it lol...thanks

Some cars are different. Some people need it changed at 60k i think the recommendation is 90k. Somewhere around there.

Recommended milage is 110k for the 7th gens. Most people usually do it sooner. I say its beneficial if you do it before every 100k.

ooooo ok...thanks...idk if i want to have it changed now or wait till 100k...but if i just do the power steering fluid flush and the mechanic are gonna tell me that i need to have my timing belt change so i guess i can have both things done.

I did mine at 80k, but that was only because my headgasket went bad. To be completely honest it sounds like they are trying to make some money out of you. P/S fluid rarely gets changed unless its really really black. If your not even at 100k miles and they are pushing you to change it they just want your money.. Find another shop.

ya i just changed my steering fluid all you need is 2 bottles of honda fluid and a turky baster suck out the old refill turn the wheel back and fourth a couple times then repeat it beats getting ripped of at the garage.

i was talking to a tech guy at the honda dealership in the summer and he said different gen hondas have different recommended times to change the timing belt. he said 7th gens the timing belt is recommended every 150-160k km (thats between 93-100k miles). he said the 6th gens are recommended at 140-150k km (87-93k miles). i never asked about the 8th gens.

he also told me that those are recommendations for climates like ours where it gets cold in the winter and hot in the summer (where i live its currently -35c...yes its that cold). if you live in a better climate, like the midwest, california, or the southern states, you could easily go even longer than this before you change it, but its not worth the risk.

i got mine done at 90,000 miles.did you get a quote for the timeing and all the other small things like the tensioner water pump and all the other belts ???

yeah thats what i was thinking about to do have both of them changed.
we havent got our first snow yet but it is dam cold outside...here in Missouri the town im in was suppose to get snow tonight..not much snow though.

ok...i dont think my parents will let me do the changing stuff myself lol...i worked for it but still paying the payments on the car got it 2 years ago and im still looking for a job lol

yeah in your climate you have more demanding conditions than the hotter places like florida or california. i had a friend from missouri that constantly called it 'misery' because of the weather. if you are already at 86k miles, you should be ready to change it soon. if i was you i would do it at 95k miles, so you still have 8-9k left before you have to get it done. that gives you enough time easily to save up some money. when you get it done, get your water pump done as well. the two go hand and hand. im guessing it will cost roughly 400-500$ altogether to get the belt/pump done. might be cheaper if you get the parts and find someone to do it though. if you can find an honest mechanic to do it, you should figure something out with him to also do the p/s fluid and give you a good deal on everything. i wouldnt worry too much about the p/s fluid, its not something thats going to 'break' like a water pump or timing belt can. it can wait until you get it all done at once.

yeah..the thing is i dont have a job lol....so im gonna talk to my parents about it and see what they say.

The water pump idk much about it lol....
Im in a auto collision class in school and we also have auto tech and i could buy the parts and have the teacher in auto tech change all the stuff for me or have a mechanic do it..but the thing is if i have the teacher do it lol...then it might take him 2 days and if the mechanics do it they can get it done that day i take it to them lol...but idk much about the engine stuff lol.

How much does a timing belt cost in your area? I live in Stockton, CA and Pepboys here wants $650 w/ parts and labor including the water pump w/ a 90 day warranty.

The service manager at our dealer in OH said that it would be $630 minus the parts cost of the drive belts that I already had replaced.

Later he told me that they do not normally change the seals or tensioner.... I became very worried for my safety and quickly left.

Going to call my trusted mechanic and get a price next week, I will post it up.

haha wow. at the very least you want new belt, seals, waterpump, and tensioner. if you have extra $$, new cam gear (tends to rust) and crank pulley (the rubber damper crumbles and falls out). and new accessory belts would be nice too!

After that you can pull the engine and get a K20... good maintenance habits though...
