Question Does Octane Matter?

Hey everyone, I am not sure about something and I want to clear it up. The octane of gas, does the higher octane make your car go faster? I am under the impression that the higher the octane, the greater the combustion that takes place when it is ignited. Gas prices are so high and this whole time ive been buying the premium, and someone told me that it doesn't mkae a difference in the way our car performs compared to the cheap stuff. Can you all please clear this up, id appreciate it.

If you have been buying premium for your civic, then you have been wasting your money!!! The d17 is made to run on 87. The higher the octane, u will get a little more boost, but it more to help the compression. The higher tuned engines (ie turbos, sports cars, etc) need higher octane, but economy cars usually don't. And usually the highest octane they need is 90, sometimes 93. Stop wasting your money and put 87 in.

The higher the compression you are running the higher the octane needed. The higher the octane the higher the flash point. If you have low octane in a high compression motor, the fuel will get too hot and ignite prior to the spark. this is detonation and is very bad. so if you have high octane it will withstand the heat and ignite when the spark is thrown. I put premium in my civic, but i have used regular when stock and it does not detonate. Hope that helps a little.

A higher octane won't do a thing for your car unless you change your compression. xblcivicx pretty much said it, gas vapor will ignite on it's own with out a spark under high compression, higher octane gas is more excact about what copression that is than lower octane. The higher octane cuts down on knock. But if you don't change that compression it won't do anything for your car at all.
