in car pc monitor??? electrical engineers welcome ;)
i wanna stick a PC in my car. id like to have a flat screen monitor. but i dont wanna have to use a real PC flat screen monitor.. i considered using a car flat screen one- like the ones for dvd playback...but those only accept rca input..maybe s-video, wither way- that means i need a pc with rca/s-video output, which isnt a big deal, but i know the resolution would suck compared to a real pc flatscreen. so..... does anyone know of a way to use a laptop screen to display my PC with? i have an old laptop with a decent 11" screen...maybe i could somehow use the screen by itself, independant from the laptop itself.
maybe ill just get a small *** 6" computer monitor.
u know those cigarette lighter adapters that provide 110volts of outlet power? can i get away with powering a pc? and a monitor? its stupid to shove 110v into a pc...i mean, it gets converted into 12v for the drives and mobo anyway! hmmmm
my ultimate goal is to have a huge, permanent, in-car juke box. with a nice screen to browse playlists and mp3s.
thanks

It would be tight to get a touch screen instead ...easyer navigation. You could hook up a lap top screen it would be pretty hard and expensive but you could do it. Good idea, but while driving its going to be hard to navigate all your songs and stuff if you have to use a mouse and keyboard.

you can always get a video card with s video output or what some people call a "video key" (which i have no idea what that is)..they say it somehow changes the monitor out to rca...

yeah, touch screen is nice, but thats getting too crazy i plan to use a tracking ball mouse, i can just roll the mouse in my fingers, and, i might not even use a keyboard. u can do everything with a mouse!

I don't have any ideas with the monitor part but Belkin makes a peripheral that fits in you hand. Features a directional pad and 10 programmable keys! I think that would work nicely!

you could get a video card (or a laptop board) that has a S-video out connection rather than the stanrard monitor one, and your options for displays would expand exponentially. if i ever have the time i may try to pull that off, but with far less custom work than the great derek or pinkytoe (a former member of this site). as for powering a PC, i would prefer to get a second battery before adding the computer. here's another thread that may help

hahah naw, man- i grew up in the days of windows 3.1, and dos 6.0!!! i remember the days when all the good games were dos based and required you to change ur config.sys and autoexec.bat files like i said- TV out WONT be a problem. i realize u can go rca or s-video out...ut what im saying is- the resolution sucks- big time. if i can keep the pure PC monitor signal, thatd be best. yeeah. a second bat would be cool...but doesnt all the juice come from the alternator when ur car is on anyway?

Completly off the subject, but I just noticed that Derek drives an Automatic

SOHC, if I was you I'd try to find a laptop screen at one of those "traveling computer shows" if they have those in your area. You can usually pick up parts dirt cheap, but they work! I just don't know how a laptop screen would appreciate the high/low temperatures in a car. Hmmmmm...

Check this site - http://www.mini-itx.com
And specifically this project - http://www.thisstrife.com/carproject/index.asp
I'm pretty sure there's a wiring diagram for a car PC in there somewhere.

like born2xLr8 said laptop screen's dont do well in really hight temps. But they dont seem to mind the cold, mine was in my car all weekend and it had been liek -10 to -20 out. I just brought it in and turned it on, it took a few mins for the colors to work right... but it seems to be fine now.
Hey guys. Just hopped on lookin' for some info on dash panels for the new accord and came across this thread. Check us out if you get a chance, we've got some really small in-vehicle PC style systems that don't require inverters, as well as some nice display panels for in-vehicle PC's. If you've got questions just check out our online forum too. Best of luck with your projects guys!
