Gas Milage

I searched -- How do you calculate gas milage properly? And how does that work since you cant really run the tank down to the last drop of fuel, so how accurate is this? Thanks... oh and I only want to know from people who know for sure... no guessing =) thx

Top off your gas tank, and reset the trip counter. Next time you get gas, fill it all the way up, and divide the miles on the trip counter by the number of gallons it took to fill it back up.

Nice... now do i have to wait for the tank to drain substantially before i can fill it up the second time? or can i use half a tank, fill it up, do the math and still get accurate readings

when i do it i usually go as low as I can go, maybe til the light comes on. when I've done it with half a tank the numbers differ a little. it won't make that much of a difference, but my opinion is go down to an 1/8 of a tank at least! my best mileage i got in my car was 43mpg in my 2k2ex cpe, a little over 440mi on about 10.5 gal not to shabby. lowest I've seen was 37mpg, but that was with my 17" wheels too..

To get the most accurate reading you really should try to use as much of the tank as possible. If you can time it right, wait until the gas light comes on before you fill it back up.

Either I'm ragging on my car too much or something is wrong with my car. I got 37mpg for the first month I had it, but now that I'm up around 12K miles, I get 32 - 34mpg regardless of how hard or how easy I drive. And most of what I've read indicates my mileage is going to go down when I throw on some 17's?? ug...

Ahh... that explains it. hehe... I spend 80% of my driving on I-70 busting to and from work in Columbus with the needle stuck at 80... so I guess I'm not doing so bad on mileage afterall?

For anyone else in Columbus, have you noticed that I-70 between Pickerington/Reynoldsburg and downtown is like no-man's land as far as cops? LOVE IT! Nothing like a 15 minute commute from the burbs to downtown... I've got friends on the north end of town that sit on the exit ramp for longer than that!

that would explain me to, I never really get to break 55mph on my commute to work.
my avg speed is like 45mph & I just throw it in 5th gear.

different cars have different speeds for best mpg, usu. this is 40-50 though.

you will get the best milage the longer you wait to fill up again. gas has weight too, so when your down 10 gallons that's almost 100lbs less weight your towing. rule of thumb says every 100lbs extra=5% drop in milage.

speaking of gas.... do u guys always go to the same gas company? are you selective about what type of gas u put in? personally- i just fill up wherever its convenient, i dont even look at the price or brand...as long as it says "regular" on the pump, im all set...tho i should prolly start being a bit more exclusive
