Need some advice on winter storage...
Hi guys/gals,
Just put my Civic away last night. I have a couple questions/thoughts concerning what should be done...
1. I haven't changed the oil yet (it's a 2k2) and it's at 7700km. My first service is supposively at 8k but I'm probably gonna go and change the oil myself. I think there's synthetic blend in there now - going full synthetic.
2. I have about 3/4 tank of gas (87 octane). Is that good/bad? I heard somewhere here that you should have the tank full.
3. I have left the car parked w/ the wheels and tires on it. I cannot possibly put it on blocks due to space limits
4. I did leave the battery in the car for now but I plan to take it out and store it inside - is that a good idea?
5. Should I cover the car?
BTW, I'm storing in an unheated garage.
In case you were wondering...it snowed here last night . I store my car about 100km away from where I live and I got caught passing through part of the storm and boy do those stock tires SUCK!

well.. fill er up.. disconnect the battery and keep it someplace relatively warm and dry.. start the car every 3-5 weeks or you'll run into some trouble in spring time..like rusted piston rings and a seized A/C Compressor..
If your only storing it for the winter months you probably won't have to worry about the tires, but definatly bring the battery inside. Change the oil.....put the cheapest you can find in there because it's just gonna sit in the pan anyhow, cause you'll want to change it again in the spring. I would take the plugs out and spray fogging oil in each cylinder and crank the engine over a few times with out the plugs in to spread the fogging oil around. a car cover is a good idea if its gonna be in a dusty environment. Also spread a tarp on the floor underneeth the car, the tarp should be larger than the car. Put mothballs all over the ground to keep critters away and either take the windshield wipers off or put a rag between them and the glass, the wiper will stick to the glass and be ruined if you leave it. also stuff a rag into the exhaust and intake to keep critters out of there as well and any other orface you can think of. that should be about it. Dont bother starting the car every once in a while and warming it up...it's better for it to just sit unless you plan on taking it out for 15 minute drive to get all the systems working and up to temp.

the oil change isn;t really necessary..but if the oil is really dirty when you store the car it can be come mildly corrosive and eat away at the seals over winter..otherwise there's no point....changing the oil after you take the car out of storage is important..
if you have more than 500 miles since the last oil change it is a very good idea to change the oil. not absolutely necessary especially if you have synthetic in it.....but it s worth the 5 dollars to have fresh oil sitting in the pan, because that way it won't decompose and gunk things up
