Easy Turbo question?

I was hoping someone could explain to me how you turn bosst up on a turbo? I just don't understand if it's a mechanical piece how do you do this? I know a supercharger/blower you can change pulleys.

Thanks

turbo uses exhaust.....the exhaust come out of the head and into the turbo....once a certian amount of pressure fills the turbo it releases it. the affect of that is boost. you can adjust how much boost the turbo can hold by a boost contoller more air in the turbo=more boost. hope that helps....happy boosting

Yep- a turbo has a "brain" if you could call it that, that can be adjusted. Like if you stuck a vacum cleaner on your header to pull the exhaust fumes out faster, and the vacum had adjustable settings for more suck.

Actually, ther is a waste gate. The turbo sucks a certaint amount of air in at certaint throttles no matter what. To control the boost you adjust the wastegate. Once the tubing for induction is filled (the tubing from turbo to throttle body) with compressed air the wastegate dosn't let anymore than what you set it at, such as 5, 7, 9 pounds of boost etc.. Then when you let off the throttle the turbo stops producing boost and the boost that is left in the tubing is released through the blow off valve. I hope you understand what I am saying. I have a turbo on my civic. Hope I could help ya.

EDIT: The wastegate is the boost controller.

the way to control a turbos actual boost pressure is to control how fast it spins. this is the job of the wastegate. what it does is control how much exhaust goes to the turbine of the turbo, and how much bypasses it. The more you let into the turbo, the faster it spins, and visa versa. The wastegate can be one of two basic types, internal, and external. internal are usually smaller and are usually mechanically adjusted by means of a screw or spring change. the external ones can generally handle higher boost pressures and generally are quite large and expensive. turbos can spin in excess of 150,000 rpm so if they go slower, less boost, faster, more boost...etc

Thanks guys that helped a lot. So does this mean that a Boost COntroller is actually controlling the wastegate to dteremine the amount of boost the trubo will make??

yes....more psi more boost harder the turbo hits...if you dont have internals u WILL break something thats why the guys on hee with turbos only run 5psi of boost....i ran about 15 psi on my eclipse and was fine b/c i did the rods and pistons....and if i changed the compression i would have been able to run about 17 lbs
