Oil Cooler
hello everyone its been a while since i've posted anything, i try to post new things on the board to look at and discus so here we go.
Oil Coolers
now my car does not run hot at all but this couldnt hurt
I've been to my fair amount of car shows and i see a constant...that constant being the more performance orientated cars usually have oil coolers equiped. prices on oil coolers vary from 90 dollars to 900 dollars but the basic principal is the same.
A cooler engine runs long and better. Ever notice your car has more pep when cold? Well acually the VTEC in our cars will not acuate until a certain oil tempature has occured. so your probably more likely to notice this in a non-VTEC equiped car. the colder we can keep an engine the less stress we put on it.
oil coolers are much like radiators...acually they are, but instead of coolent being passed through the radiator it is oil...they are usually much smaller...about the size of a dictonary, and even as small as two dollar bills on top of eachother. they can effectivly reduce tempetures from anywhere from 30 to 70 degrees depedning on the engine. using synthetic oils with an oil cooler almost compleatly can reduce oil breakdown and sludging.
honda engine rev long and rev hard and in the process run hot. four cylenders in gerneral fun hot because of how many strokes they take compared to a 6 or 8.
adding more horsepower to your car also creates more heat. our prime way of cooling our engine is the radiator. why not take the extra precaution and add an oil cooler? i'd like to see my temperature guage lower is always a good thing.
oil coolers usually have adaptors that go on in front of the oil filter and are easily mounted almost anywhere. the prime spot being in the path of air flow. there are many ways to mount oil coolers but that way is the easiest.
oil coolers do have their downsides......even though most are tested up to 600 punds of force they can still be punctured and your oil can come out of the car........this is where an oil pressure guage comes in handy.
termal dynamics are laws.......we cant beat them..........but by reducing operating tempetures we can safely free up power and let our engine last longer.

nice topic my friend, great post.....ive tried bringing up areas of discussion in similar areas, regarding oil filter relocation...but most people that belong to this board are into one thing and one thing only...if it dont "add" hp then they wont look at it, or read it....
i am planning on adding a filter reloactor and oil cooler eventually...let me know if you ever do!

an oil cooler is not deisgned to lower engine operating temperature, it is designed to prevent coking in high performance (worked) engines. High performance engines run hotter internally and thus they can cook their oil (coking) and clog the oil venturis in the block. Transmission cooler works on the same principal, it won't create ANY horspower, it simply protects your engine from heat buildup and degredation. But if you want one then feel free.
I only know this because we were thinking of adding an oil cooler to our SAE Formula Car here at school and decided oil temperatures did not reach a critical level at any point in operation. We spoke alot with Briggs and Stratton and Yamaha on the issue and came to the above conclusion.
