removed muffler
ok today i was messin around with my car and decided to take off my muffler to see what it would sound like and if it would provide any gains. i unbolted it the rear section right after the resonator. it sounds bad *** but i want to know if it is harmful for the car. i don't really notice any gains with it off but it sounds mean and looks a lot cleaner from the back. has anyone done this?
i did that to a junker car i have...91 toyota tercel...it messed it up pretty bad..when you step on the gas it takes a minute for the throttle to respond after i took of the muffler...it messes with the back pressure..i don't know how bad it would affect our cars...but the toyota sure does sound mean!
edit: my tercel is a piece of **** anyways..there could be other things wrong with it...

my exhaust fell off my 4gen civic. i ran it like that for like 2 weeks. sounded like a monster but it ruined the motor. I put a new exhaust on it and within 500 or so miles it started to smoke pretty bad. Your motor needs back-preasure, thats what a mufflers there for, besides of course to make it quiter. leave your exhaust on, or go out and buy an aftermarket one if you want it to be loud. don't be ghetto in a brand new car!
w/out your muffler you run a high chance of messin up your engine. there is a risk of cold air getting sucked back up and cracking your block. its very very possible. i know a bunch of crews that have run open headers and a few of them have cracked their blocks and ruined their engines. dont do it, if you want the sound jsut cut your resonator, and if you want gains just get a exhaust system. plus, w/out your exhaust your backpressure is f-ed to hell. u can forget about high end power.
One thing that is different than the olde cars mentioned is the new civic is designed differently. Not having a muffler on these cars won't do any damage. You aren't feeling any gains cuz you need to reset the ECU. You are going to go through gas like a ****. You should feel the top end pull more without the muffler.
