Exclamation [FIXED]motor shuts down

EDIT : It was the ignition switch. BUT, Honda only sold the whole kit with a brand new key at 175$ CAD. Add half an hour of labor.

175$ was kind of expensive for a switch, but a used one could had the same defect...

So my Civic 1998 EX 1.6L(256 000 KM) made me panic this afternoon : I was driving at 80 KM/H when the RPM and odometer needles went to zero and I lost all acceleration.

The brakes and power steering were working properly.

I stopped, shut down the car and all was back to normal once restarted.

Also, I don't know if this is related but my handbrake dashboard light seemed to light-up randomly. Sometimes it keeps on , sometimes it don't.

Help?

Thanks.

Vince

Re: Occationnal lost of accelaration

Absolutely not!

When you stall, there's a bunch of lights in the dashboard that lights-up, like when you're on the ON position, but not started.

In my case, there was none.

Re: Occationnal lost of acceleration

Well, I drove a good 100 KM yesterday and 20 today and had no problems. The strange handbrakes lights was gone...

Could it be a computer bug?

Thanks.

Re: Occationnal lost of acceleration

What do you mean the odometer needles?

Was the engine still running when pulled over? That would explain the loss of acceleration.

I think the handbrake light is an unrelated issue.

Re: Occationnal lost of acceleration

Sorry, I meant the speedometer. English is my second language, so I don't know all the technical words.

I'm not sure about the engine running or not, I was more worried about if the brakes were working...

I friend told me it might be the ignition switch, but said it wasn't that after I told him the stereo was still playing...

Thanks.

I don't think so, they were all replaced one year ago.

It did it again this afternoon. Damn it! Only this time the car stalled not long after the tachometer and speedometer went down.

After stopping and re-starting the car(it started as usual : fine), the tachometer went crazy for half a second...Then another perfect 10 KM....

Hope I won't need to use a towing for tomorrow 4 hours trip!

Re: Occationnal lost of acceleration

It didn't do it for more than 1 week, than 2 times in a row while on movement.

Today it did it just after I started...

Re: Occationnal lost of acceleration

So I went to my local Honda dealership, and they said it was the starter key switch.

Do you guys agree with them?
