Re: alternator removal

have you tried penetrating spray or pb blaster? can try a longer socket wrench for more leverage, but dont break off the bolt if its stuck. its prolly rusted in there.

I'll give it a good soaking tomorrow. I gave up for the night. The bolt doesn't have a head on it, just a square end to prevent it from turning when the nut is turned.

so far... i put the nut back on and threaded it to the end of the bolt to prevent damage to threads... hammered as best i could with the limited space.. put a block of wood against it and kicked at it... swore at it and now i'm leaving it alone.

tomorrow will be a fun filled day of hammering. any other ideas are welcome.

Re: alternator removal

If you have access to a torch that will do, but be careful with the wires. Mine had to be heated. And now that you have soaked it, a little heating will definately get it done.

still stuck.. more heating and hammering to go tomorrow. I unbolted the motor mounts and lowered it a bit on the jack so that i could hit the bolt head on.

more ideas are welcome. I'm getting desperate and thinking about having it towed to a shop to have it done.

Re: alternator removal

try a breaker bar (or put a pipe extension on a socket wrench) for more leverage. as a last resort, you may have to use dremel and cut it loose, then deal with getting the rest out once the alternator is off.

still no luck. I had the nut off a couple days ago, but i cant pound the bolt through, or budge it. the head of the bolt doesnt have a hex head or anything to secure a socket to, just a flat square end to keep the bolt from turning when tightening the nut.

i think i need a bigger hammer and a stronger arm

Update:
I got the bolt flush with the mount, but no further. I'm throwing in the towel. I'm going to find a shop that is willing to cut it out...

Re: alternator removal

I had a local shop remove it. It took 30 minutes with an air hammer to beat it into submission. the bolt is in really corroded and mangled from removal. What is the best replacement bolt material that will resist corrosion and seizing to the sleeve in the new alternator?

random question: I drove to the shop on battery power with the alternator disconnected and the belt cut off. Why didn't my battery light on my instrument panel turn on? I would have assumed that driving on battery alone would trigger the batt light. It usually kicks on at low rpm with the bad alternator so i know its not burnt out.

Re: alternator removal

hmm maybe alternator wasnt plugged into the harness so the ecu had no way of knowing that less power was being produced. try and get the hi grade bolts they have at the hardware store and use anti-sieze grease on it.
