I need muffler help

first off i'm on a college budget which will explain my desparation to save $. I just bought a new muffler as the old had a hole in it. When i unbolted the old, i was disapointed when the joint of the resonator pipe was rusted away. I knew i was set up for failure but i put the new one in even though the male part of the old pipe wasnt there to insert into the new muffler piping. I tightened the 2 bolts connecting the pipe to the new muffler. worthless, the exhaust is just as loud as before because of lack of a seal at the joint.

will it work if i cut off a small section of the end of the resonator pipe and put a "flare flange" from autozone in place of it and use that to rebolt the two pipes together? otherwise the joint between the cat and the resonator is just as rusty. so i would have to replace the cat, resonator pipe as well.. i dont have the cash to do it.

any other ideas? feel free to ask if i need to clarify anything

Re: I need muffler help

If you know any good, small muffler shops you could probably get it welded on for pretty cheap.

the best that a muffler shop can do is to cut out the section thats rusted and weld in new piping. you cant weld rust. but, if your hole is in a difficult spot, you may just need to get a whole new part.

You shouldnt need a cat its stainless steel. It dosent rust. Any hole in the wall muffler shop could do a stock cat back to your new muffler for around 80.00. if you stop and think how much your going to spend a autozone and the fuel you spend driving up ther 2 or 3 time cuz what you bought the first time wont work or you need more parts. you could just get it done right and save you self the time and the hassel.
