Honda transmission question.
Why is it that some honda transmissions have play when turning the mainshaft back and forth? This is caused by the gear teath not mating perfectly, a gap in other words, resulting in a clunk sound when the shaft is turned clockwise and counterclockwise by hand.
I checked out an 98 EX trany that was on sale today, it had ZERO gear gap. Zero clunk! Amazing. While mine has a lot of play.

Re: Honda transmission question.
That backlash is necessary. If there's no backlash there's no room for any thermal expansion or any bearing play . Gears that mesh too tightly make sparkly oil (they chew each other up). There's specs for it in build-up that U measure w/ a dial indicator.
